Hatching (Finnish: Pahanhautoja) is a body horror film directed by Hanna Bergholm and written by Ilja Rautsi that was released in Finland in 2022. Jani Volanen, Reino Nordin, Saija Lentonen, Siiri Solalinna, and Sophia Heikkilä feature in the film. On January 23, 2022, it had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.
Hatching is another scathing satire of online culture in an age where they’re growing popular. The benign Norman Rockwell picture of suburbia life, as well as the seamy underbelly it occasionally hides, was the subject of a slew of horror films in the 1980s. The mother routinely uploads videos of her ideal family and their wonderful home, and she’s enlisted the help of her entire family to maintain the illusion she wishes to project.
Mothers are usually absent from classic gloomy fairy tales, leaving place for wicked stepmothers. The sugary sweet mother, on the other hand, is a smothering presence in Finnish filmmaker Hanna Bergholm’s compellingly frightening first feature, Hatching; her concern with portraying a spotless picture of household harmony instead helps to the creation of a monster. This body-horror nightmare investigates what happens to the maternal instinct when love is replaced by an unnatural fixation with perfection in a very unusual coming-of-age thriller in which a difficult pre-adolescence triggers a hideously physical war between the ego and the id.
