Hillsong Church used to be a star-studded place of worship, but in recent years, the scandal has eclipsed its charismatic form of Christianity. Hillsong: A Megachurch Exposed, now a Discovery+ docuseries, goes deep into the headlines, including former pastor Carl Lentz.
Lentz, who was once Justin Bieber’s spiritual advisor, was fired from Hillsong in November 2020, following a 10-year stint due to “moral shortcomings,” according to the organization. He soon confessed to being unfaithful to his wife Laura, whom he married in 2003 and has three children with. Rain Karim, a New York woman who claimed she met Lentz in a Brooklyn park in May 2020, claimed she was his mistress amid the turmoil.
The teaser for Discovery Plus’s upcoming original three-part documentary series about Hillsong church was unveiled on Thursday, with the network stating that it will “examine the high-profile, star-studded church’s alleged exploitation, abuse, and cover-ups” of the global movement.
Brian Houston created Hillsong in Australia, and it now has churches all around the world. Scenes from religious services are mixed with interviews and photographs of scandal-plagued headlines in the trailer.
The documentary will feature interviews with New York Post reporter Hannah Frishberg, former Hillsong volunteer Janice Lagata, megachurch specialist Ben Kirby, and Ranin Karim, who had an affair with former Hillsong pastor Carl Lentz, according to the press release.
