The rights to distribute the documentary film “Hockeyland” in North America have been purchased by independent distributor Greenwich Entertainment.
The movie, which is directed by Tommy Haines (“Saving Brinton”), centers on two competing high school hockey teams in Minnesota’s North Country, a region known for producing excellent hockey players who later play at the university and professional levels, including in the National Hockey League (NHL). Fast-paced on-ice action is combined with an observational method to look at two towns and their teenage heroes as they deal with crippling injuries, problems off the ice, problems with their families’ health, and the pressure to become an NHL great in the future.
The Midwest-based factual film firm Northland Films is the producer of “Hockeyland,” which is executive produced by Carson Kipfer and produced by Tommy Haines, Andrew Sherburne, and J.T. Haines.
The movie will open in theaters on Sept. 9 starting in Minneapolis and other Midwest locations before traveling to the rest of the United States and Canada. In October, a digital release will come.
The Oscar-winning documentary “Free Solo” by Jimmy Chin and Chai Vasarhelyi was distributed theatrically by Greenwich, and it brought in $17.5 million in North American box office revenue. The Grammy-winning documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” Isabel Coixet’s “The Bookshop,” with Emily Mortimer and Bill Nighy, and Madeleine Olnek’s “Wild Nights with Emily,” with Molly Shannon, are among the further Greenwich releases.

Is “Hockeyland” on HBO Max?
“Hockeyland”won’t be streaming on HBO Max. The good news is that fewer animated films are departing the website now than there were in August. In the past, nearly 10 animated series—including Close Enough and Infinity Train—were mysteriously deleted off the website. Animators discussed the site’s abrupt decision, worried that even more of their projects might do the same.
Thankfully, we don’t anticipate as many animated programs going anytime soon in September. However, a few well-liked films, both animated and non-animated, are about to end. While it’s good to know that animators won’t need to worry too much, the bad news is that filmmakers are now the artists in danger as more than 30 movies are departing HBO Max.
