John Madden, the Oscar-nominated director of “Shakespeare in Love” and “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel,” is in charge of “Operation Mincemeat.” The script was written by Michelle Ashford and is based on Macintyre’s book.
“Operation Mincemeat” has been tipped as a likely Oscar contender based on early dealmaking hype. Firth reunites with producers Iain Canning and Emilie Sherman for the project. For their work on the 2010 film “The King’s Speech,” all three of them received Academy Awards.
Operation Mincemeat has been bought by Netflix in a number of countries. The film stars Colin Firth (The King’s Speech), Matthew Macfayden (Succession), and Jason Isaacs in a big-budget World War II thriller (Harry Potter saga). As of October 2021, here’s the most recent information and all we know so far.
The film, which was first revealed in May 2019, was directed by Oscar-nominated director John Madden, who is best known for his work on Shakespeare in Love.
Michelle Ashford, best known for Showtime’s Masters of Sex, wrote the script for Operation Mincemeat, which was based on novelist and historian Ben Macintyre’s book of the same name. With producers Charles S. Cohen, Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Kris Thykier, the picture is produced by See-Saw Films (The King’s Speech) and Cohen Media Group (Howard’s End).
Is “Operation Mincemeat” based on a true story?
The film is based on the incredible true story of two intelligence officers who outwitted German troops in 1943 by using a body and bogus papers.
During these events, the Allies are determined to launch an all-out assault on Fortress Europe. They are, however, faced with an impossible task: protecting a large invasion force against entrenched German artillery while preventing a massacre.
Operation Mincemeat was a World War II military deception operation carried out by the Allies. Its goal was to make the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily look like a ruse by installing fake documents and communications on a corpse and impersonating the corpse as a fictional army Captain. The body, together with the records, was released from a submarine near the Spanish coast, and the documents were communicated with the Germans, leading them to believe that Greece would be the main target of the Allies. The mission was a success since even Adolf Hitler was duped by the plot and did not deploy enough troops to protect Sicily while the Allies liberated it.
Ewen Montagu (Colin Firth) and Charles Cholmondeley devised and executed the operation (Matthew MacFayden). The Trout Memo, released in 1939 under the name of Admiral John Godfrey, Britain’s director of naval intelligence, but written by Ian Fleming, who is best known for creating the renowned gentleman spy James Bond, was, however, an inspiration. Like a trout, an enemy can be lured or trapped in 54 different ways, according to the letter.
After the war, Ewen Montagu wrote The Man Who Never Was, a book describing the entire operation. The novel was converted into a film of the same name in 1956. Netflix’s dramatization, on the other hand, is based on novelist and historian Ben Mcintyre’s Operation Mincemeat book.
Colin Firth, who earned an Oscar for his role in The King’s Speech, is in charge of Netflix’s Operation Mincemeat. Matthew Macfayden will accompany him (Succession, Ripper Street). Ewen Montagu and Charles Cholmondeley will play the two masterminds behind Operation Mincemeat. Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire, No Country for Old Men) will play Marine officer Jean Leslie in the film.
Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin, Penny Dreadful), Johnny Flynn (Vanity Fair, Genius), and Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The OA) will play Winston Churchill, Ian Fleming, and John Godfrey, respectively, alongside the three stars.
Operation Mincemeat began filming in December 2019 and ended soon before the COVID-19 outbreak in Spring 2020. Filming took place in the United Kingdom, Spain, and the United States.
