If you’re a fan of Shouko Komi’s social anxiety antics, there’s more to come. During the spring 2022 anime season, Komi Can’t Communicate is set to premiere its second season. The series premiered in October 2021 and became a weekly release on Netflix.
It’s no surprise that the anime has been renewed, the manga is extremely popular, and 24 volumes have been published in Japan to date.
Despite being only the second anime original series to be released on Netflix, it did well there.
In Komi Can’t Communicate, Hitohito Tadano heads into his first day of high school with a clear goal: to stay out of trouble and do his best to blend in with the others. He fails right away when he sits next to Shouko Komi, the school’s madonna. He is now considered someone to eliminate for the chance to sit next to the most beautiful girl in class.
Komi, with her long, dark hair and beautiful beauty, is universally adored and wildly popular despite her mysterious persona. She, however, suffers from crippling anxiety and a communication disorder and, as a result, cannot fully socialize with her classmates.
In the classroom, Komi is left alone with Tadano, and a chain of events forces her to communicate with Tadano by writing on the blackboard, as if in a one-way conversation. As the first person to realize she cannot communicate properly, Tadano picks up the chalk and begins to write. Eventually, he discovers that Komi’s goal is to make one hundred friends during her time in high school. Thus, he lends her a helping hand, becoming her first friend in the process.
Anime fans were thrilled with the first season, and we’re even more eager for the second season.
To what extent has the anime covered the manga?
It covered roughly 73 chapters of the ongoing manga during its first season. The anime has published 346 chapters as of the time of writing, which means that it has only scratched the surface of its source material.
What will the release date be for Season 2 of “Komi Can’t Communicate”?
Its 12-episode first season concluded on a hopeful note. During the school culture festival, Komi and her eccentric classmates run a student maid cafe. While they didn’t win any awards for their hard work, they celebrated by going to a karaoke bar. In typical Komi fashion, despite being too shy to sing, she is praised for her performance. Everyone ignores Tadano’s performance, but Komi tries to support him openly.
Towards the end of the episode, Komi recounts her newfound friendships and the memories they have brought her. Though she’s still a long way from her self-assigned goal of 100 friends, she already cherishes the ones she’s made. Tadano, in particular, has gained a deeper affection from her.
Komi’s animated cast revealed in a post-credits scene that Season 2 was already in development.
Season 2 is expected to premiere in Japan on April 6, 2022, according to the official Japanese website. New voice cast members and theme songs were also announced. Throughout the spring 2022 anime season, there will be weekly episodes of the series.
Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the series, even though the Japanese broadcast has been set. Netflix released new episodes of Komi Can’t Communicate two weeks after its premiere in Japan for its first season. Previously, Netflix streamed entire seasons of new anime several months after its weekly Japanese airings. It’s likely that Komi fans will have to wait a little longer for new episodes, even after they come out in Japan.
The Netflix release schedule for Komi should be consistent, so we don’t have to wait months between episodes.
