Undoubtedly, we have all grown up hearing terrible witch stories that target and abduct small children. Such weird creatures do in fact exist, at least in the imaginary worlds, despite the fact that these tales were just made up to persuade small children to behave in an acceptable manner.
Kryb was an alien from the planet “Vora” who first appeared in the Green Lantern comics in 2007. He collaborated with the Yellow Lantern Corps to torment the Green Lanterns. Kidnapping Green Lanterns’ children in front of their eyes was one of Kryb’s defining M.O.s for instilling dread in the Green Lanterns. Let us investigate her history and have a look at this creepy extraterrestrial with a sack full of kids!
Exploring the origins of Kryb
Kryb was a member of the Yellow Lantern Corps, often known as the Sinister Corps. They were established by the cosmic super-villain “Sinestro,” and they frequently clashed with the Green Lantern Corps.
Although Kryb is a crucial member of the Yellow Lantern Corps, nothing is known about her past other than the fact that she was born on the planet Vora in Space Sector 3599. Kryb had a very clear strategy, and he frequently targeted the Green Lantern Corps’ young members.
She hunted out Green Lantern Corps members who had just been married, murdered them, and then kidnapped their kids. Kryb carried all the kids she kidnapped in a huge sack resembling a bone on her back. Kryb’s body produced a mind-controlling liquid, and she fed this to the children in order to force them into obeying her. She later kept these children on pods on her planet ‘Vora,’ and her psychosis led her to believe that she was actually saving them from the Green Lantern Corps that she referred to as ‘oppressive green lanterns.’
The Sinister Corps were on a mission to terrorize the Green Lantern Corps by hurting their families, and Kryb played a huge role in fulfilling this mission. She mostly went after newborn children and instilled fear in their parents’ hearts by first threatening their children and then murdering them as they helplessly watched their children. She also used her bodily fluids to force the Green Lantern corps to give up their children, and at one instance, she actually tried to carve a child out from a pregnant Amnee Pree’s womb. While her actions were cruel and twisted, Kryb derived a lot of pleasure from them, and she genuinely believed that she was saving these children and giving them a better future.
‘Lyssa Drak,’ who was the keeper of the ‘Book of Parallax,’ once talked about Kryb with the Green Lantern Corps and cautioned them in advance. Amnee and Matoo Pree were also present when Lyssa talked about Kryb’s M.O., along with some other married Green Lantern couples. Lyssa told them about the Green Lantern ‘Jeryll’, who had recently given birth to a girl when Kryb decided to kidnap the child. Kryb made her way to their home, and Jeryll’s husband called her in a panicked state to warn Jeryll about Kryb. By the time Jeryll returned home, Kryb had already murdered her husband.
Moreover, Jeryll spotted Kryb standing with her newborn baby in hand, and she lost all her willpower after seeing her baby in danger. Kryb managed to kill Jeryll without much effort and then consoled the infant in her arms. Kryb then promised the child that she would never harm her before placing her along with the other kidnapped children.
In one instance, she murdered all the Green Lanterns of Sector 1607 and then went after the Sappal family in Sector 1111. She murdered both Airam and Nhoj Sappal and then took away their son ‘Samoth.’
The Green Lanterns were very disturbed by Kryb’s actions, and they decided to lead a rescue team to free all the kidnapped children. Kyle Rayner then headed to sector 1111 along with some other Green Lanterns, such as Matoo Pree and his pregnant wife, Amnee. While Amnee managed to rescue one of the Green Lantern’s kids from Kryb, she accidentally revealed her own pregnancy to Kryb. The Green Lantern Corps launched an attack on Kryb, but the Voranian alien managed to deflect their attacks and even caused a mass explosion in the Sector House of Sector 1111. This explosion caused the Sector House’s orbit to decay, causing it to fall through the atmosphere.
Kyle Rayner was horrified by Kryb’s actions, and he even discovered the bodies of the Green Lanterns murdered by Kryb. While the Sector House was falling through the atmosphere, Kyle launched an attack on Kryb and started physically assaulting her. Kryb retaliated by shooting a yellow liquid from her chest, and this liquid went past the Green Lantern’s shields. The Green Lanterns then found themselves under Kryb’s control, who then revealed that this liquid helps her control the minds of her victims.
Kryb was determined to get her hands on Amnee’s unborn child, and she ordered the Green Lanterns under her control to fight Amnee. While Amnee fought her own teammates, she went into labor, and Kryb then ordered the Green Lanterns to hold Amnee down. Kryb decided to perform a C-section on Amnee to take away her child, but Kyle broke through the mind-control and tried to put a stop to Kryb’s plans. Kyle also freed the other Green Lanterns from Kryb’s control, and they together tried to save Amnee’s child from Kryb, while Kyle and KT21 cornered Kryb, Amnee’s husband ‘Matoo’ and another Lantern named ‘Soranik Natu’ helped Amnee get through the birthing process.
In the midst of the chaos, ‘Miri Riam’ from the Star Sapphire Corps made an appearance. These corps’ power rings got their powers from ‘love,’ and Miri Riam had been summoned at the scene as a result of Amnee’s and Matoo’s strong love bond.
Miri Riam helped Kyle and KT21 while they fought Kryb, and they together succeeded in finally subduing her. Kyle decided that Kryb should be taken to the planet ‘Oa’ where they will place her in a sciencell that she cannot escape. These sciencells were intergalactic prisons, and not even the most powerful criminals could escape them. However, KT21 was not satisfied with this plan and was worried that Kryb might escape one day and come after her children. She tried to kill Kryb on her own, but the alien used the bone sack on her back to retaliate and kill KT21 instead.
Before Kryb could cause any further damage, Kyle and Miri Riam trapped her in a green energy crib. Miri Riam then used her star sapphire power ring to trap Kryb in a violent crystal case, and the Green Lanterns decided that it was best to let Miri Riam take care of Kryb. Miri Riam took Kryb to the planet of ‘Zamaron,’ where the founders of the Star Sapphire Club ‘Zamarons’ would be in charge of rehabilitating her.
During the Blackest Night arc, Kryb was still encased in the violet crystal that Miri Riam had trapped her in. She was then rescued by ‘Tekik,’ who was an active soldier of the Yellow Lantern Corps. Kryb immediately traveled to her home planet ‘Vora’ to check up on all her kidnapped children, but she discovered that they had all turned into ‘Black Lantern Corps’ after starving in her absence. Kryb then ran into trouble with the Red Lantern ‘Guy Gardner’ and eventually came to Earth to help the Yellow Lantern Corps fight against ‘Nekron,’ leader of the Black Lantern Corps.
What makes Kryb so powerful?
As a member of the Voranian race, Kryb had many powers and abilities that helped her in her missions to terrorize the Green Lantern Corps. She had a rather scary physiology, with a sack-like pouch made of bones on her back and long, disproportionate limbs.
Kryb’s most powerful weapon was her mind-controlling liquids that her body produced on its own. These liquids targeted the DNA of her victims and then bonded them together with Kryb’s DNA. Kryb then had the power to control her victim’s minds and get them to perform tasks for her. Kryb secreted these liquids from her chest, and she produced these liquids in the form of breast milk. Kryb also fed this liquid to the kidnapped children, making them obedient and easier for Kryb to handle.
As a Voranian, Kryb had enhanced stamina, and she could endure a lot of painful and challenging situations without much trouble. Kryb was also a master at instilling fear in the minds of her victims, which was considered her M.O. Her intimidating appearance, paired with her ability to control the minds of her victims, made her a very fierce opponent.
As a member of the Yellow Lantern Corps, Kryb had a Yellow Power Battery that could be used to charge her Sinestro Ring. The Sinestro Ring was the preferred weapon of the Yellow Lantern Corps, and Kryb also possessed one of these.
This ring, also known as the ‘Qwardian’ Power Ring, gave Kryb many additional abilities that helped her destroy the Green Lantern Corps. Kryb could move objects at her will with the help of this ring and even communicate with the other Sinestro Lanterns by using it. The ring also projected energy beams, and Kryb could blast energy as well as fire blasts at her opponents with its help.
She could also conjure up a force field and even construct or create any object that she desired out of pure energy emitted from the ring. Kryb’s ring was connected to the Main Battery on Qward, and this battery obtained information from the Parallax. It served as a computer that provided Kryb with information that she needed to locate the Green Lanterns or fight them.
The ring shared crucial information either loudly or silently by playing it directly in Kryb’s mind. It had an extensive database of crucial information regarding its opponents and even translated it into various languages, which helped Kryb work together with the other Yellow Lantern Corps. The ring also chose its bearer by deciding if the candidate is capable of instilling great fear in their opponents, and Kryb particularly excelled in this department.
The ring also gave Kryb the ability to create illusions or mirages to fool the Green Lanterns and play tricks on their minds. She could also phase through walls or any solid substances as long as she wore the ring. Kryb’s ring also allowed her to probe through the minds of any Green Lanterns or any other being. Moreover, she could also read their thoughts and even go through their past memories.
Kryb’s ring helped her control the general temperature of her surroundings, as well as specific places in the universe. She could increase or decrease the temperature of stars or even produce bubbles made of intense heat or cold in order to use them as a weapon. Kryb’s ring also gave her X-Ray vision, and she could see through various objects in her surroundings. However, this ability did not work on all sorts of objects, and some materials were resistant to this power of the ring.
While Kryb’s ring gave her many additional abilities, this power ring was not a fool-proof weapon and often needed to be recharged with the help of a Power Battery. In the absence of a power battery, other sources of energy, such as a cosmic cube, also worked, but they were not effective after a certain period of time. Though Kryb and the Sinister Corps heavily relied on the Power Rings during any attacks, these rings were of no help without any battery, and constant care had to be taken in order to keep the rings well-charged.
Conclusion
Kryb was one of the most terrifying members of the Sinister Corps, and her ways of instilling fear among the Green Lanterns really stood out among the other Corps. She was a nightmare to all the married Green Lanterns, who lived in a constant state of fear over their child’s security. Though Kryb’s actions were twisted, she seemed to believe that she was actually doing good and saw herself as a savior of these kids!
