Can Josh Ruben, Director Of Werewolves Within, Make A DARKMAN Remake Happen?

Josh Ruben, who directed the fantastic horror comedy WEREWOLVES WITHIN, is planning a remake of Sam Raimi’s cult classic DARKMAN!

It’s common news that Josh Ruben intends to remake Sam Raimi’s legendary superhero film Darkman from 1990. Josh casually revealed it being his ideal project while chatting on the Dread Central programme ‘Developmental Hell’ last month. We’ve done some digging since then and discovered that it wasn’t the first — or the last — occasion he mentioned the title. Is he, however, the proper director for the job?

Werewolves Within, a video game adaptation by Josh Ruben and writer Mishna Wolff, was a huge sensation at last month’s Tribeca Film Festival. Anyone who has seen the movie knows why. It features one of the best ensemble casts we’ve seen in years, as well as a superb combination of horror and comedy. Doesn’t it sound like lightning in a bottle? Perhaps not. Scare Me, Josh Ruben’s great directorial debut from 2020, begs to differ.

Darkman is worth the watch if it was released before your time. It’s a great mix of dark and comedic that only Sam Raimi could have concocted.

Darkman is based on a short story written by Sam Raimi to pay homage to Universal’s horror output from the 1930s. Peyton Westlake (Liam Neeson) is a character who gets mutilated and left for dead by a crime lord in the basic setup (Larry Drake). To heal his injuries, Peyton, a scientist, turns to unconventional remedies. It’s not going to work. Peyton acquires superpowers while still being disfigured.

Darkman is fantastic and deserves more attention. Who better to tackle a retelling of this wild property than Josh Ruben, possibly the most active Darkman fan on the internet?

To add to the intrigue, the always amazing CreepyDuckDesign just created a concept poster for the imaginary production, and it’s a beauty. Take a look!
