In the new comedy “Lust,” Swedish actors Sofia Helin, Anja Lundqvist, Julia Dufvenius, and Elin Klinga star as four middle-aged pals battling with restricted sex lives. “Lust” will premiere at the Berlinale Series Market in March and will be available on HBO Max in March. The show provides pleasant relief while highlighting the under-examined world of females over 40 by balancing albeit lighthearted comedy with a more serious focus on themes such as sexual harassment, marriage counseling, and personal identity.
“Lust” distinguishes out as one of the few contemporary comedies devoted entirely to middle-aged lead female characters, thanks to an idea that came from the actresses themselves. “The actresses came up with the idea to do something about female sexuality after 40 since they realized that the characters they were offered to portray lacked sexuality as they approached 40,” says producer Sandra Harms. They mentioned that there must be a lot of untold stories here, which I thought was fascinating. We sat down to discuss how to present this story, and we quickly decided on comedy.”
Frans MilisicWiklund, a writer for Harms, appeared like the ideal candidate to take on scriptwriting duties. “A woman would have been the obvious writer choice,” she argues. “However, I just thought this was ideal for Frans.” He’s great at capturing a contemporary tone and delving into sexuality issues.”
Wiklund admits that his presence seemed like “the elephant in the room” at first for a show about women’s sex lives, but that the collaborative nature of the plot development gave him the confidence to move forward with the project. He recalls, “The players shared me a lot of personal things.” “They were quite open, and I attempted to include all of their suggestions into the play.”
Each 30-minute episode focuses on one of the show’s four characters and their sensual mishaps in equal measure. “Lust” addresses each woman’s journey to understanding her needs and how to unlock them again in later life, whether it’s Nadia (Lundvist) having an affair with her mafia boxing coach or Anette (Helin) doing government research in Sweden on sex and women’s health. The humor keeps things lighthearted, but it doesn’t take away from the story’s pathos or its potential relevance with viewers in and outside of Sweden.
