“Mack & Rita” is a fictional story. The cinema canon has always included age-swap flicks. Feel-good stories about acceptance of oneself have warmed audiences’ hearts for decades, from Big to 13 Going on 30, and many have gone on to become timeless masterpieces.

The subgenre is now investigating an experience of a lady over 70, a story that is rarely conveyed on television. Mack (You’s Elizabeth Lail), a 30-year-old influencer who feels cut off from her childhood, is the subject of the television show Mack & Rita.

But when attending a bachelorette party in Palm Springs, she accidentally enters a past-life regression session (directed by Simon Rex of Red Rocket), and when she comes out, she is shocked to discover that she has practically transformed into her 70-year-old self (played by Diane Keaton).

The Morning Show director Katie Aselton’s film follows Mack as she embraces her inner self and reinvents herself as Glamy Granny “Aunt Rita.” Rita discovers herself an unusual social media sensation after being liberated from others’ expectations, and she finds herself at the heart of a blossoming romance with Mack’s dog walker (Schitt’s Creek Dustin Milligan).

But once she finally finds herself, will the external change be as lasting as the inward one?

The remaining cast members include Wendie Malick, Patti Harrison, Martin Short, Addie Weyrich, Aimee Carrero, and Nicole Byer. Taylour Paige (Zola), Loretta Devine (Family Reunion), Amy Hill (50 First Dates), and Lois Smith (Lady Bird) round out the ensemble.

On August 12, Mack & Rita will advance the clock in cinemas.
