The Czech Republic, 15th century. Jan Zizka, a fierce and heroic warrior, leads his ragtag army of peasants to victory against the invading Teutonic knights. What is Medieval (2022) all about?
As the gradual ending of the 14th century was approaching closer, the reign of King Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia was also coming to its end. Though he had inherited the throne from his father, Charles IV, Wenceslaus’ reign was marked by weakness and instability. This led to increased power for Henry III of Rosenberg, a nobleman who began seizing properties belonging to the lower nobility.
A knight and valiant mercenary, known as Young Jan Žižka, became the resistance when Rosenberg’s seized his own family’s property. Žižka sought revenge against Rosenberg, setting in motion a series of events that would culminate in the leading of the Hussite army.
The document between Rosenberg and the League of Lords outlining their plot to overthrow the monarch is sent to the warrior Wenceslas by Rosenberg’s fiancée Katherine, who also happens to be in love with him. The League is successful in snatching the king despite the plan being discovered.
Wenceslas is set free by the king’s army, but he is forced to accept a demeaning peace. Ika must therefore decide between two options: give up the struggle for justice in exchange for a greater status in the royal court, or continue fighting despite being alone herself and without support.
Žižka decides to keep fighting, even though it means being alone and abandoned. This choice demonstrates his dedication to justice, even at great personal cost. As a result, he is an inspirational figure which shows that even when the odds are piled up against you, it is certainly possible to stand up for what is right. It is a film that tells the story of these two men and the power struggle that defined late 14th century Bohemia.
