The heavy metal community, which is largely underrepresented (and usually misrepresented), may look forward to early April. The first trailer for Metal Lords, the musical comedy written by Game of Thrones author D.B. Weiss, has arrived, and it appears that the cast is ready for a wild and loud journey.
The Netflix film is about a group of kids who decide to form a heavy metal band in order to create history at the ridiculous Battle of the Bands. The trailer shows a typical high school environment, but with a twist: the only two heavy metal fans are trying to recruit new members for their band, which means convincing others that this musical genre is just as good as any other. Fortunately for them, one of the potential members possesses the heavy metal attitude they seek.
In a high school where only two kids care about heavy metal, two kids want to start a heavy metal band. Hunter (Adrian Greensmith) is a passionate metal fan who understands his history and can shred. His life goal is to win the next Battle of the Bands competition. Kevin (Jaeden Martell), his best buddy, is enlisted to play the drums.
Finding a bassist is difficult, though, because schoolmates are more interested in Justin Bieber than Black Sabbath. Until Kevin overhears Emily (Isis Hainsworth) playing her cello with abandon while trying to get along long enough for Skullf*cker to win the Battle of the Bands, the motley ensemble must deal with school, parents, hormones, and teen angst.
The trailer also teases the possibility that Metal Lords may be analogous to a School of Rock, with the kids taking matters into their own hands to study the skill and history of the music style they’ve chosen. The question is how their parents will react. To find out, we’ll have to wait until the ultimate clash at the Battle of the Bands.
Metal Lords is directed by Peter Sollet, who is no stranger to telling stories about youths obsessed with esoteric musical styles: he also helmed Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist, a film about teenagers searching for a special and secret indie rock band concert. Weiss, a six-time Emmy winner who rose to prominence for producing and writing HBO’s Game of Thrones, is also attached to adapt the highly anticipated sci-fi series The Three-Body Problem for Netflix.
Jaeden Martell, Isis Hainsworth, Adrian Greensmith, Noah Urrea, Analesa Fisher, Michelle Fang, Phelan Davis, Brett Gelman, Sufe Bradshaw, and Joe Manganiello are among the cast members of Metal Lords.
