It tells the story of Ford Strauss, a psychiatrist who becomes embroiled in the CIA’s MK Ultra program. The program, which ran from the early 1950s to the late 1960s, saw the CIA conducting unethical and often illegal experiments on unwitting subjects in an effort to better understand mind control and human behaviour.
While many of the details of the program are still shrouded in mystery, the film promises to offer a riveting look at one of the darkest chapters in American history. With a cast that includes some of Hollywood’s biggest names, the thriller show is sure to be a hit. Joseph Sorrentino has directed the show that stars Anson Mount, Jaime Ray Newman, Jason Patric, and others.
What is MK Ultra (2022) all about?
In the early 1950s, the CIA began experimenting with ways to control human behavior. The goal was to find methods of interrogation that would force confessions through brainwashing and psychological torture. The program, called MKUltra, used a variety of techniques, including the covert administration of psychoactive drugs, electroshocks, isolation, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, and verbal and sexual abuse.
The results of these experiments were often devastating. Many subjects suffered permanent physical and mental damage as a result of the abuse they endured. In some cases, the experiments even led to death. The full extent of the MKUltra program’s cruelty may never be known, but its legacy is one of pain, suffering, and exploitation.
MKUltra was preceded by two drug-related experiments, Project Bluebird and Project Artichoke. CIA’s Office of Scientific Intelligence organized it and coordinated with the United States Army Biological Warfare Laboratories. The program engaged in illegal activities, including the use of U.S. and Canadian citizens as unwitting test subjects.
MKUltra’s scope was broad, with activities carried out under the guise of research at more than 80 institutions, including pharmaceutical companies, colleges, universities, hospitals, and even prisons. The CIA operated using front organizations, although some top officials at these institutions were aware of the CIA’s involvement.
MKUltra used a wide variety of methodologies to manipulate people’s mental states and alter their brain functions, including the use of drugs, hypnosis, sensory deprivation, isolation, verbal and sexual abuse, as well as various forms of torture. The overall goal of the program was to break down an individual to the point where they would be completely controlled by the CIA. The methods used in MKUltra were often brutal and resulted in lasting psychological damage to many of the subjects who were involved.
CIA Director Richard Helms’s order to destroy all MKUltra files in 1973 created a major challenge for investigative efforts. The Church Committee and Rockefeller Commission investigations both relied heavily on the testimony of those who were directly involved in the project. A Freedom of Information Act requests the revealing of a cache of 20,000 documents relating to MKUltra. This led to Senate hearings that shed new light on the scope and extent of the project. Despite the destruction of most of the project’s records, the surviving evidence provides a clear picture of one of the CIA’s most controversial programs.
