“Official Competition,” the newest comedy from Argentinian directors Gaston Duprat and Mariano Cohn, transforms Oscar candidates Penélope Cruz and Antonio Banderas into film business stereotypes. Below is a link to the film’s ridiculous trailer.
Cruz is a renowned director who is hired by a rich entrepreneur (José Luis Goméz) to create the film of the century in “Official Competition.” Banderas will portray a radical theatrical performer opposite Oscar Martinez in the imaginary film. While Cruz tries to educate them both on how to act properly, the renowned nemeses fling insults at each other over who is a more money-hungry sellout.
The celebrities are put through a series of progressively bizarre exercises that push them to confront not just one another, but also their own Hollywood legacies. The film will be released in cinemas on June 17th.
“Official Competition” debuted at the Venice Film Festival in 2021, five years after Duprat and Cohn’s award-winning movie “The Distinguished Citizen” made waves there. Martinez also acted in the film, winning the Cuppa Volpi, the festival’s highest acting award.
“Official Competition” in Spanish was commended by IndieWire for capturing the same fun as “Distinguished Citizen.”
Following a brief sequence together in Pedro Almodóvar’s “I’m So Excited,” this represents Cruz and Banderas’ first major cinematic collaboration. Cruz previously appeared in “Pain and Glory” as Banderas’ mother in flashbacks as a youngster.
Cruz, according to IndieWire, “looks like the cover of a disco album” with her frizzed-out hair and huge earrings, while the actors in “Official Competition” also have the proper costumes and cosmetics.
On June 17, the film “Official Competition” will hit cinemas.
