He is a German politician who is currently serving as the Chancellor of Germany, taking over from Angela Markel, since 2021.

    Before becoming the Chancellor, Scholz served as the Vice Chancellor of Germany under the Chancellorship of Angela Markel. Scholz is also a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

    He has also held important positions in the government like that of Federal Minister of Finance (2018-2021) and was the First Mayor of Hamburg (2011-2018). In 2009, he was appointed the deputy leader of the Social Democratic Party and remained so until 2019.

    Scholz is married to politician Britta Ernst. His wife comes from the same party as him. The couple moved to Potsdam in 2018.

    Olaf Scholz was born on 14th June, 1958 in Osnabruck, Lower Saxony, West Germany. He was raised in the Rahlstedt district in Hamburg. Scholz attended the University of Hamburg in 1978 to study law. He took up a one-stage legal training course that earned him his first job as a lawyer with a specialization in labor and employment law.

    Scholz’s family is of Lutheran belief and he was baptized as a child. Scholz is of a secular mindset and left Church as an adult, but he has a deep regard for the country’s Christian heritage.

    In the beginning of his career, Scholz was a lawyer with a specialization in labor and employment law. Given his area of interest, Scholz, at the age of 17, became a member of the Social Democratic Party. From 1998-2011, he was a member of the Bundestag. In 2001, Scholz served under OrtwinRunde, the First mayor, in the Hamburg Government. Scholz was elected as the General Secretary of the Social Democratic Party in the year 2002.

    He served alongside the Chancellor at the time, Gerhard Schroder. Scholz became the party’s Chief Whip in Bundestag. He joined the first Merkel Government in 2007 as a Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. A significant difficulty came when the Social Democratic Party quit the Government after the 2009 elections, following which Scholz returned to the party to lead it in Hamburg, where he was elected the party’s Deputy Leader.

    He spearheaded the 2011 Hamburg state elections and was able to drive his part to victory following which he gained the position of the First Mayor of Hamburg and stayed so until 2018. In 2018, when the Socialist Democratic Party entered the 4th Merkel-led government, Scholz’s political genius was recognized, and he was made the Minister of Finance as well as the Vice-Chancellor of Germany.

    In 2020, he was nominated for the position of Chancellor as a candidate of the Social Democratic Party. This nomination was for the 2021 federal elections. In Bundestag, the party won a greater share of seats and entered into a coalition with Alliance 90/The Greens and Free Democratic Party to form what was called the ‘traffic light coalition.

    Scholz is also an ardent supporter of environmental protection. An instance of this can be seen with the Climate Protection act (revised) that was introduced by his cabinet when he was the Mayor. The plan would provide 65% reduced Carbon Dioxide emissions by 2030, a predicted reduction of 88% by 2040, and complete carbon neutrality by 2045.
