It almost seems too bizarre to be true, yet Our Father is an investigative documentary, and Dr. Donald Cline is a real person.

Ballard and her newfound siblings realize they’ve only scratched the surface of his dark web of deception, and their quest for justice is at the center of this really disturbing narrative about an inconceivable violation of trust.
The narrative of the planned documentary is factual, even if some events are fake or dramatized. In 1979, Cline started a fertility clinic in Indiana and used his own sperm to impregnate women who came to him for artificial insemination, saying the contributions came from medical residents. As a result, in the 1970s and 1980s, he fathered at least 50 children.
It wasn’t until individuals who shared Cline’s DNA began to link the connections through at-home DNA testing and social media that they realized they were half-siblings, and the terrible reality dawned on them.
The half-siblings found each other and began piecing things together, according to a 2019 investigation by The Atlantic. One of the first was Ballard. She identified another woman whose mother had been treated by Cline after registering on an online forum for adoptees and donor-conceived children, and she also knew another woman. A DNA test verified that they were half-sisters and indicated that they had more in common.
