The project that Soo Hugh has been working on for the past four years will finally be released in roughly a month. So, it’s a little surprise that the showrunner described her general feeling about the release of her highly anticipated Pachinko drama series as “bittersweet” when asked about it.
It’s an epic and visually breathtaking tale that follows multiple generations of a Korean family, beginning with a young woman named Sunja who lives in early 1900s Korea, as the trailer and exclusive photographs reveal. Sunja falls pregnant, but when she learns that her boyfriend is already married, she chooses to marry another man and travel to Japan with him, all in the hopes of giving her kid a better life.
The multigenerational storyline explores important topics such as identity, acceptance, and duties to one’s family and future generations, despite the fact that the series portrays a specific environment and community. Hugh claims that another family drama, The Godfather, was one of the show’s references. “The topic of survival is what I’m interested in, but at what cost?” she asks. “If you don’t have a safety net as a child, your choices and the consequences of those decisions are drastically different from those who have.” Yes, you can live, but how far are you willing to go?” It puts all of our characters’ moral fortitude to the test.
The drama, which is produced by Media Res and Blue Marble Pictures, stars Youn Yuh-Jung, a recent Minari Oscar winner, as the elder version of Sunja and newbie Minha Kim as the younger version, both of whom provide extremely powerful performances. Solomon is played by Jin Ha of Devs and Love Life, while the ensemble cast also features Lee Minho of F9 and Anna Sawai of F9.
Hugh, who adds that the series will be renewed for four seasons, understands the weight of responsibility that comes with shepherding a ground-breaking show and what it could imply if it fails after its premiere, not just for the series’ future, but also for the future of other projects like it.
