If you’re someone who likes to keep track of what animated films are coming to theatres and streaming services near you, there’s a good chance you’ve been following Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank’s long voyage to the big screen. This CG-animated martial arts comedy, which was originally titled Blazing Samurai as a loose play on Mel Brooks’ famed satire, Blazing Saddles, was first announced in 2015 and was previously expected to be out in April 2017 but a variety of difficulties delayed the release for half a decade.
As time passed, it became difficult not to worry if this film would ever see the light of day. Was it a cursed object? Is this really a real film? To say the least, the time hasn’t been on their side. However, it appears that its worst days are coming to an end. Paws of Fury is officially planned to come later this year, as indicated by its new poster (and new title), and we’ll soon get a new trailer to announce its newly-minted summer release. This difficult production has had a long and winding road, but perhaps the wait will be worth it in the end? On that front, only time will tell.
On the bright side, Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank will now be released in theatres on July 15th, smack dab in the thick of the summer movie season. Hopefully, this demonstrates some confidence on the part of Paramount Pictures, given the film will be released two weeks after Minions: The Rise of Gru on July 1st and two weeks before DC League of Super-Pets on July 29th. Due to the epidemic, families appear to be more comfortable coming to the movies this year than they were the two years prior, so it’s no surprise that studios are aiming to release as many notable family animated films as they can over the school-free summer.
While it’s reasonable to infer that the pandemic played a role in the protracted postponement of Paws of Fury, the change of hands inside the long-in-the-works animation production was ultimately the most distressing factor. Originally set to be directed by Oscar-nominated filmmaker Chris Bailey in his feature debut, Rob Minkoff and Mark Koetsier, the latter making his directorial debut, was confirmed as the new director last year. During this period of transition, Susan Purcell and Yair Landau were replaced as producers of the film by Adam Nagle and Guy Collins.
Paws of Fury has also bounced across production firms and distributors in recent years, with Open Road Films, had previously acquired the film in 2015. The picture was bought up by Paramount earlier this year. While the film has undergone numerous alterations throughout production, screenwriters Ed Stone and Nate Hopper have been credited from the start. So, ideally, the tale hasn’t undergone too many major modifications in the long term.
It’s also worth noting that the celebrity voice cast has mostly remained the same, with Michael Cera slated to portray Hank, Samuel L. Jackson set to play Jimbo, and Ricky Gervais, Djimon Honsou, George Takei, Gabriel Iglesias, Michelle Yeoh, and, as a nod to Brooks, a variety of supporting characters. There’s a reasonable probability that these high-caliber actors were a significant reason why Paws of Fury remained a hot topic of conversation from start to finish, despite the film’s long delays.
If you want to witness the first footage from Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank, check in to Nickelodeon at 7:30 p.m. for the Kids’ Choice Awards. On April 11th, the entire trailer will be released.
