Sion Sono, best known for Suicide Club and Bloody Disgusting’s Cold Fish now brings to us action-horror spectacular Prisoners of the Ghostland which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, starring Nicolas Cage and Bill Moseley.
The film will finally hit cinemas, digital HD, and VOD outlets on September 17, 2021. Cage has already stated that Sono’s English-language debut, Prisoners of the Ghostland, may be the wildest Cage film to date, and Sono addressed this in an interview with EW ahead of the World Premiere.
There are samurais, ninjas, and ghosts in the storey,” Sono hinted, implying that Cage wasn’t joking.

The movie is set in the perilous frontier metropolis of Samurai Town, where a brutal bank robber played by Cage is freed from prison by wealthy warlord The Governor, played by Moseley, whose adopted granddaughter Bernice, played by Sofia Boutellahas gone missing. In exchange for retrieving the runaway girl, the Governor grants the prisoner his freedom. The bandit then sets off on a trip to find and bring back the young woman which leads to his own path to redemption. He is also clad in a leather suit that will self-destruct in three days.
He would rather leave that question up to the audience, Sono tells EW in response to Cage’s recent remarks. However, he said that he is aware that Nicolas Cage has created a number of excellent works and given stellar performances, some of which are also decidedly bizarre. He stated that he would be overjoyed if audiences actually thought this was Cage’s wildest, craziest film ever.
The movie is ‘out there’, Cage said recently. We’ll see him dressed in a skin-tight black leather jumpsuit with grenades connected to various body parts, and they’re going to blow him up if he doesn’t rescue the governor’s daughter from this state boundary where they’re all ghosts and bring her back in time.
