Any horror movie is incomplete without a few specific things at the production stage. One of them is the department of makeup and special effects. A legend from the said world is Stanley Winston, without whom Hollywood horror would not be where it is today. Having worked in movies like the Terminator series, Jurassic Park, Aliens, Predator, Iron Man, and Edward Scissorhands, the makeup mogul has four Academy Awards under his belt of the people James Cameron chooses to work with frequently. Today, we look at 14 of the most iconic creations of the late maestro across a variety of genres:
.She Creature from The Queen of the Layer– Released in 1997, this sea-themed movie gives us a devilish mermaid straight out of our nightmares.
.Pteranodons from Jurassic Park 3– Although most of the creatures when featured flying in the movie was computer animation, while on the ground, the creatures were played by humans in a special suit with special effects.
.Yautja warrior from Predator– Predator was one of the movies that did not pull any punches when it came to the special effects and make-up, and the final reveal of the Yautja was nothing less than breath-taking.
.Tooth Fairy from Darkness Falls– The 150-year-old ghost in the 2003 movie was one of Winston’s best works, with burn marks and decomposition leaving all of us with goosebumps.
.T-800 from The Terminator– This was the first collaboration between James Cameron and Winston, and this was the one big break that put Winston in the big leagues.
.Kothoga from The Relic-This hellish monster was a blend of multiple animals, including spiders, horses, elephants, and crocodiles, and Winston took full liberty in creating something that nobody else could have imagined.
.Hell Knight from Doom– Although the movie can be called sub-par, the Hell Knight, created from the inspiring video game, was a brilliant show of pure skill.
.Velociraptors from Jurassic Park– From a technical and artistic perspective, these creatures were nothing less than magical.
.The Mummy from The Monster Squad– The classic Mummy created for this movie while also working on the Predator took us right back to the original 1930s movie.
.Gillman from The Monster Squad– The second addition for the same movie above, this was the monster that undoubtedly stole the prize for The Monster Squad.
.Xenomorph Queen from Aliens– Undoubtedly one of the best monsters we’ve seen in the genre as a whole.
.T-Rex from Jurassic Park– One of the marvels of engineering, weighing approximately 9 tonnes. With over 50 moving parts within, the Jurassic Park franchise would not be the same without this carnivore.
