Zombie fiction is making a comeback, and who better to lead the shambling, decaying charge than Resident Evil, the renowned sci-fi horror franchise? Resident Evil’s gritty, action-heavy campiness has won it a passionate audience and a firm position in video game history, spanning 26 years, 14 consoles, and 7 films – some more well-received than others. Netflix is now attempting a live-action Resident Evil adaptation, and the results appear to be heading in some interesting directions.
For the uninitiated, the first few mainstream games take place in and around Raccoon City, a fictionalised Midwestern town where the villainous biomedical firm Umbrella Corporation conducts a series of diabolical biological experiments. The T-virus, a mutagenic agent responsible for all the zombies and other monsters stalking the heroes, is the most notable of their inventions. Some of the characters are members of S.T.A.R.S., a special operations unit affiliated with the Raccoon City Police Department, while others are ordinary citizens drawn into the situation by forces beyond their control, which is a fitting premise for a survival horror game. When Resident Evil is released, keen watchers will be on the lookout for these themes and notions.
The trailer begins in hell: a flyover of what was once a city but is now a wasteland filled with the maddened undead and the besieged survivors desperately trying to flee them. An adult Jade explains in a voiceover that, while “they believed the world ended in 2036,” the actual end of the planet occurred far sooner. The view suddenly shifts to a bright, clean metropolis surrounded by vegetation. “Welcome to New Raccoon City,” says a sign as the lone automobile approaches.
A calm woman’s voice extols Umbrella Corporation, “a firm beset by scandal” that is “now attempting to remake itself,” while a younger Jade and her sister Billie explore their new house. Both the voice delivery and the city pictures have a weird, Stepford-like quality to them: they’re too clean, tranquil, and flawless to be true. “The things we’re working on today – they’re going to transform the world,” adds the speaker, who appears to be a representative of the Umbrella Corporation of some type.
Billie observes a strange caterpillar crawling across her hand as she brings it up to the camera. Then everything changes in an instant: the pavement fractures, red soil erupts skyward, and we watch Jade fleeing her life from a massive, monstrous worm. This is the start of the end of the world that grownup Jade predicted. “We have a problem,” Albert says as we witness a lab rat smash the glass of its cage; then we cut to him as he calmly explains, “The medicine contains a T-virus.” He goes on to say, “The T-virus may create monsters,” and we see some of those monsters as he speaks: Undead humans shambling around, a nasty undead dog.
Something appears to be threatening Billie, and in the following scene, she appears to be dead or comatose; we observe young Jade wailing in pain. More frightening images of Billie, other survivors, and other beasts pass by before we meet mature Jade, drenched in blood. She hisses an expletive, stands up, and takes a chainsaw to the shop. The next few shots depict Jade and others battling back against the zombified hordes, with the series tagline “Evil Has Evolved” intercut in between.
Netflix announced on June 6 that a series adaption of Capcom’s iconic survival horror video game Resident Evil will be available on the service. Since 1996, there have been numerous sequels, novelizations, and even a live-action film franchise.
The new Resident Evil series was first revealed in 2020, and eight one-hour episodes were greenlit. Andrew Dabb, who is most recognised for his work on Supernatural, is the show’s creator, writer, and executive producer. Lance Reddick, Ella Balinska, Adeline Rudolph, and others are among the cast members. Albert Wesker is played by Reddick, Jade Wesker is played by Balinska, and Billie is played by Rudolph.
Despite the fact that the Resident Evil franchise has been adapted multiple times, it is no stranger to live-action. The first mainstream instalment included live-action sequences, which were the only ones in the video games at the time. The Paul W. S. Anderson live-action film franchise is (in)famous for its loose connections to the source material; Capcom encouraged creative liberties out of worry that fans would abandon the games in favour of the films.
UMBRELLA BRINGS COMPLETE GLOBAL ANNIHILATION IN RESIDENT EVIL
According to Netflix’s upcoming series, sisters Jade and Billie Wesker travel to Upcoming Raccoon City, where the pharmaceutical company Umbrella Corporation strives to atone for prior transgressions that lead in global instability and massive disaster. During their stay in their new home, they progressively unearth deadly mysteries about the town, Umbrella, and the girls’ infamous father, Albert Wesker. The story will be divided into two parts, the first of which will take place in New Raccoon City in 2022 at the commencement of the outbreak, and the second in London in 2036.
Umbrella created a concoction called “Joy,” as was revealed in the second teaser. It contains the T-Virus, despite being touted as a wonder medicine that can treat OCD, reduce anxiety, and improve focus. The T-Virus had mutagenic properties in the Resident Evil franchise, causing necrosis and disrupting higher brain processes, reducing the victim into a violent, voracious creature motivated only by primitive instincts. As part of its eugenics research and B.O.W. (Bio Organic Weapon) development, Umbrella created the T-Virus.
Long-time fans will recognise references to the franchise throughout the trailer. The T-Virus has created monsters including the Zombies, Cerberus (zombie Doberman), Web Spinners (huge spiders), and the Licker, all of which are portrayed extensively. At the end of the trailer, what looks to be the Tyrant appears in a reenactment of its first game’s debut scene.
The use of the classic red-and-white umbrella emblem in 2036 suggests that the new series is distinct from the main games. This is confirmed by the fact that the T-Virus is still the most common mutagen used to turn living beings into terrifying monsters. Despite the fact that both time periods take place long after Wesker’s death at the end of Resident Evil 5, which took place in 2009, Wesker appears in the Netflix series. Although the series incorporates themes from many chapters, it is currently unknown whether Wesker’s illegitimate son Jake Muller (first introduced in Resident Evil 6) will play a role in the plot.
On July 14, 2022, Netflix will release the new Resident Evil series.
