In May 2020, SpaceX made history by sending two NASA astronauts to the International Space Station aboard a commercial rocket and spaceship. That achievement, which restored American access to space from U.S. land, is now the subject of a new Netflix documentary, the first trailer for which can be seen below.
SpaceX’s Demo-2 mission for NASA, which flew astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on a four-month journey to the International Space Station, is the subject of “Return to Space,” a documentary is set to premiere in April. It was the first time NASA astronauts launched into orbit on a commercial spacecraft, using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket and Crew Dragon spacecraft (dubbed Endeavour).
The film, directed by Oscar winners Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin (“Free Solo,” “The Rescue”), follows SpaceX founder Elon Musk and NASA’s efforts to launch the first American crewed trip from Florida since the space shuttle fleet was retired in 2011. Until SpaceX’s Demo-2 mission, NASA relied on Russia’s Soyuz spacecraft to transport astronauts for nine years.
SpaceX has launched three crewed missions for NASA (a fourth is slated to launch in April) and the first all-civilian voyage to orbit with its private Inspiration4 mission in September 2021 after its Demo-2 mission in May 2020.
SpaceX will also use its Crew Dragon spacecraft and, eventually, its new Starship deep-space vehicle to launch three private orbital missions for billionaire Jared Isaacman (who purchased the Inspiration4 flight).
NASA chose SpaceX as one of two businesses (the other being Boeing) to launch astronauts on private space taxis in 2014. Boeing has already conducted one uncrewed test mission of its Starliner spacecraft, which failed to reach the space station, and plans to fly a second uncrewed voyage in May.
