“Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution,” a new two-part documentary event from A&E Network, will explore the evolution of Black comedy and the comedians who have utilized incisive humor to expose, confront, and ridicule society’s injustices and explain the Black experience in America.
The documentary, which was executive produced by Kevin Hart’s HARTBEAT and Period Studios, analyzes Black humor through a unique perspective, charting the growth and societal awakening of the brave comedians who dared to speak truth to power and pushed against the confines of their time. Mario Diaz and Jessica Sherif co-direct “Right to Offend: The Black Comedy Revolution,” which premieres on A&E on June 29 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and June 30 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. On the A&E app and aetv.com, “Right to Offend” will be available to watch on demand and stream.
The film explores the history of black humor and its underappreciated role in the societal change in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. From the civil rights movement’s Redd Foxx, Moms Mabley, and Dick Gregory, to the power of In Living Color and Def Comedy Jam in the 1990s, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle in the 2000s, and groundbreaking modern-day comedians and creators like Key & Peele, Issa Rae, Amber Ruffin, and Tiffany Haddish, to the power of In Living Color and Def Comedy Jam in the 1990s, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle in the 2000s, and “Right to Offend” is a four-hour documentary that examines the unique position these artists, and many more, possess in our culture as entertainers and truth-tellers who communicate to audiences in ways that no other performers can.
The two-part event reveals the personal stories and tribulations faced by many Black performers in achieving greater acceptance and opening the doors for a true representation of the Black experience, featuring interviews with some of the greatest comedy minds of all time as well as a rich collection of archival material. The film also shows how each generation of comedians built on their predecessors’ roots to help expand and push the bounds of comedy as a tool for social change, as well as fight for a better definition and understanding of what it means to be Black in America.
