There are plenty of examples of hostage talks gone bad in cinema and television. “Windfall,” a good illustration of how difficult situations can bring out the worst in people, was just published on Netflix last week. Being cornered, on the other hand, may sometimes be a source of immense inspiration, as it was for one infamous trio of South African liberation fighters.
“Silverton Siege,” which will premiere on Netflix next month, dramatizes the events of January 25, 1980, when a bank was taken hostage by rebels, sparking a campaign that led to Nelson Mandela’s release from jail.
Set in 1980, the film depicts three teenage freedom fighters fleeing the police after a failed anti-apartheid strike forces them to take refuge at a neighboring bank (in Silverton), where they hold the customers hostage for security. As police surround the bank, the trio’s request for temporary sanctuary becomes more serious, and they demand Nelson Mandela’s freedom in exchange for the hostages.
Mandela’s battle for equality and efforts to overthrow the racist apartheid government placed him in prison; he had already spent 18 years of his life behind bars. The Silverton trio demanded his immediate release, believing that none of their people could be free as long as one of them was enslaved.
They had no idea that their actions would spark a worldwide movement. Tensions are high on both sides, as they are in any hostage negotiation situation, and the teaser suggests that the film will be epic and high-octane.
Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini, and Stefan Erasmus star as the Silverton Siege trio, a group of three teenage freedom fighters who risked their lives to launch a movement. Tumisho Masha, Michelle Mosalakae, and Elani Dekker also star in “Silverton Siege.” Pambili Media, EPs Dube, and Walter Ayres are among the producers.
“Silverton Siege” is directed by South African filmmaker, writer, and award-winning cinematographer Mandla Dube, known for helming the Netflix series “Jiva!” and the 2016 film “Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu.”
