We may be ecstatic about the prospect of a She-Hulk series right now, but the wait for a She-Hulk project might have been much shorter. In the 1990s, this character was almost given her own film, and this was all before the popular MCU took over.
The character was becoming increasingly popular, and her appearance in the animated show only made things perfect for a movie appearance. Larry Cohen was keen on developing a movie surrounding this character, and Brigitte Nielsen, the ex-wife of Sylvester Stallone, was supposed to play the role. These are not mere speculations because Brigitte Nielsen actually joined the project officially. Even the promo shots were complete, and we got to see glimpses of this diva in full She-Hulk makeup.

We’ve been raised with the concept of female heroes who must meet an unusual level of perfection. Their physique would be alluring to the male fans, and they would usually be bestowed with the thinnest of waists and ample bosom!
Many fans might be rooting for a new brand of feminist heroes, and it would be wrong to suggest that we didn’t have enough heroic female protagonists. However, not much has changed when it comes to female heroes being projected as powerful, but appealing ladies. They can be extremely powerful as long as they are equally attractive, and from Gal Gadot to Scarlett Johansson, the casting says it all!
Is She-Hulk a feminist hero that defies preconceptions as a female warrior? We all know the answer to that, don’t we! It is simply a case of female empowerment filtered through the male gaze, and that is hardly unfair considering the fact that a vast majority of the consumers are males.
The studios might harp on how they are trying to break the barriers and empower women, but the fact still remains that they have to retain the bodacious women and their skimpy outfits, even as they fight the most powerful evil forces!
David S. Goyer, the man who wrote screenplays for iconic DC characters, has dismissed She-Hulk outright as a giant green porn star. He claimed that this character was merely created to cater to the lusty fans, and such controversial comments drew a lot of flak.
Stan Lee himself came out in protest, and so did thousands of fans. However, there was a significant section of the audience that couldn’t deny the harsh truth in Goyer’s statement. The right or wrong of this matter is a debate for another time, but it is what it is!

She-Hulk has been openly slut-shamed in comic books on several occasions. For example, she is seen at Johnny Storm’s party dressed up in her clichéd French maid garb. The latter goes crazy at the sight of She-Hulk in an alluring uniform, and proposes to her right away. The way she feels, is kind of unfortunate because the comic book shows her repenting her dressing sense.
It is almost like she is guilty that her appearance and mannerisms make her colleagues and friends approach her with lust in their hearts! She rejects the advances of Johnny Storm, but later, she goes to check on him as if it was her fault.
There are several other instances, where it is hinted that she has multiple partners, and the constant reminder that she is out of the ordinary in terms of her character, is somewhat disappointing!
She-Hulk was Married to a Man-Wolf who was J. Jonah Jameson’s Son!
She-Hulk has been linked to a number of romantic relationships. Several heroes and villains from the Marvel world were linked to this seductive superhero, but her brief relationship with John Jameson, the son of J. Jonah Jameson, was one of the most intriguing.
Over the decades, John has been shown to be everything from Man-Wolf to an astronaut, and his marriage to She-Hulk was bizarre and interesting at the same time.
They got married in Vegas, and later, it was learned that their union was simply manipulated by another character called Starfox. The marriage was short-lived, but many were stunned by such an unexpected turn of events!

Changing She-Hulk’s Character from an intelligent one to a violent maniac

Although She-Hulk can be quite violent, she is known for her control over her rage. Unlike the Hulk, she deals with the effects of the transformation much better, and she even portrays a strong and kind persona to go with her powers.
When she was seen to be receiving additional gamma radiation from a Celestial, she transformed into a bulkier version of herself. She also grows more impulsive, and there isn’t much to separate her from her short-tempered cousin.
Jennifer was shown to thrive in the freedom of giving in to her uncontrolled rage, but her loss of self control did not go down well with the fans. They demanded a change to the character, which would restore her sensible status once again. Maybe it is time to bring the old Jane Walters back!
Portraying She-Hulk as more efficient than Hulk
The parallel between the two heroes is obvious because they share comparable powers in many ways! It’s widely debated who is more powerful, and Marvel has toyed with the idea several times. If we go by sheer logic, Bruce Banner does appear to be stronger. He got the powers from a direct gamma exposure, and his cousin She-Hulk only got it from a faulty blood transfusion.
There have been times, when Jennifer herself admitted that her cousin was a lot stronger than her. However, there is something unique about She-Hulk that Bruce Banner lacks. While Hulk is ruthless and exhibits raw power, the same cannot be said for Bruce Banner.
On the other hand, Jennifer is a skilled fighter even in her regular human form. She was trained by the likes of Captain America and Gamora, and this has made her a force to reckon with, even without transforming into her green avatar.
Although the Hulk smashes harder, one of the tales claims that She-Hulk destroyed Thanos on her own! She-Hulk has been shown to be more dependable than the Hulk, and thus, even if the strength is considerably lesser, the efficiency is at par.
They both have remarkable feats and accomplishments, and thus both sides of the debate are acceptable. If Hulk punched time and held the planet together with his maddening strength, She-Hulk too is an unstoppable entity in her rage-induced condition. Instead of rating them against each other, it is fair to compare their strengths and weaknesses because both Hulk and She-Hulk are respected superheroes.
Creation of the She-Hulk was a mere money grab opportunity
When we go into the character’s history, we find several intriguing origin stories. The notion for such a figure was nothing more than a way to get the cash registers to jingle. The 70s were troublesome times for the comic book industry and the sales figures took a terrible hit.
Even popular hits like “Spider-Man” and “Fantastic Four” had ridiculously low numbers to show, and Marvel realized that they would have to diversify. The first thought was to introduce new characters, and they came up with the likes of Luke Cage, Hellcat, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman, etc.
The real incentive behind these characters was simply to reach out to a wider audience. For instance, the only purpose to create Luke Cage was to bring in more African American readers on board, and the Cat or Tigra(pronounce:-Ty-gra) was introduced to appeal to young girls.
She-Hulk was conceived with the same mindset, and it debuted on CBS during the height of the Hulk’s popularity. The original series writer, David Anthony Kraft, has admitted that the team had to come up with a new storyline urgently because Marvel and Stan Lee were keen to ensure that the rights of this character remained with them.
Fortunately, such a hasty creation did not ruin the storyline, and She-Hulk went on to become a steady character even though it was kept away from the screens. Currently, Disney owns both Marvel Comics and ABC, and this is probably why we are finally getting a She-Hulk series, which was long due!
Casting Tatiana Maslany
Tatiana Maslany will play the main role Jennifer Walters in the upcoming She-Hulk TV series. She’ll be Bruce Banner’s cousin, and she’ll be able to morph into a gigantic green monster as well. While not much is known about the plot, it is confirmed that Mark Ruffalo would reprise his role as the Hulk, and Tatiana Maslany from “Orphan Black” would be playing She-Hulk.
