11 Spine-Chilling Breeding Monster Horror Films – Explored

Some horror films from the 1980s and 1990s have gone on to become the standard for the genre. The breeding monster was a bizarre category that gained prominence at this time.

The breeding monster is associated with a great deal of violence and gore, particularly in scenes where the monster rips the human mother’s body apart and then begins its carnage. This article will discuss 11 horror B-movies from this genre, most of which were released in the 1980s and 1990s but not entirely.

Inseminoid (1981)

Inseminoid (1981)

Directed by Norman J. Warren, Inseminoid is a British horror film. The story revolves around scientists and archeologists who are excavating the ruins of an extinct civilization on another planet.

They discover crystals of an unknown origin, suggesting that this civilization was controlled by some sort of chemical intelligence. Meanwhile, Dean White and Ricky Williams get injured in a mysterious explosion.

One of the crystals pulsates and takes over Ricky through his wound, causing him to go back to the cave where they found the crystals. He ends up causing damage to Gail and she ends up dying after she freezes to death. He is killed by the documentation officer and buried with Gail outside the cave.

When two others, Mitch and Sandy, return, they are attacked by a monstrous alien. It kills Mitch and forces Sandy into breeding with it. It triggers an accelerated pregnancy in her and things go out of hand when more mysterious explosions block off the caves.

Meanwhile, chemical intelligence takes over Sandy and she gains superhuman strength. She kills Barbara, mutilates Dean, and drinks his blood. She also blows up the base transmitter but her crazy antics begin to subside gradually. The others try to sedate her but once she reverts back to her strengthened state, she kills her peers and then disembowels the corpses.

The survivors try their best to subdue her but she overpowers everyone with ease. She also feeds on flesh and breathes the toxic atmosphere with ease. She birthed hybrid twins, who are also born with a thirst for blood. No matter what happens, Sandy’s rampage seems to have no end.

Director Warren exceeds expectations by pulling off a script that could’ve gone south easily, especially due to its low funding. Ultimately, this outer space horror ends up being an entertaining film.

Baby Blood (1990)

Baby Blood (1990)

Directed by Alain Robak, Baby Blood is a French horror film that revolves around the womb of a pregnant woman getting invaded by a parasite and everything that follows.

The film begins with a berserk leopard in Africa being captured. It is then shipped off to a circus in France. This circus is run by a terrible guy who beats his wife and physically abuses her.

The leopard’s new life in France makes it go through some sort of metamorphosis and it starts to host a parasite. The parasite slithers out of the leopard and finds a new target – a circus performer and the wife of the circus owner, Yanka. However, she was pregnant due to her garbage of a husband’s abuse and as luck would have it, the snake-like parasite crawled into her uterus. To make matters worse, it started to gestate within the fetus.

The parasite telepathically begins to demand Yanka for human blood. She is reluctant at first but heeds to it as her dynamic with the parasite is her only relationship. She begins to commit murders to nurture her parasitic baby with its beverage of desire.

The parasite patiently waited for the day it would be reborn as it was allegedly a species that would dominate Earth as the primary form of life in about five million years after dethroning humanity from the spot. It also demanded to be released into the ocean following its birth because that’s where it had originally spawned.

The director of the film is a fan of B-films and had created Baby Blood when there was a high demand for films of the fantastique genre in France. The film revels in gore as Yanka spills gallons of blood as she murders to nourish her monstrous fetus.

Meridian (1990)

Meridian (1990)

Meridian: Kiss of the Beast is a 1990 horror film. The film was directed by Charles Band and revolves around a twisted magician and his twisted antics.

As Catherine Bomarzini’s father passes away, she inherits her family’s castle in Italy. Her best friend Gina is also in Italy and she restores an old painting in an Italian church. The two friends unite and attend a local carnival together. They meet a magician named Lawrence there and invite him and his gang of ‘freaks’ to their castle for dinner.

During their interactions at home, the magician seduces Catherine and Gina. He drugs the two of them and physically forces herself on Gina in front of his crew. He tries to pull the same disgusting antic on Catherine and takes her to a room. He strips to seduce her but proves himself to be an even bigger scumbag by pulling away so that his twin brother Oliver would get a chance to have sex with her.

Following this, Catherine begins to see the apparitions of a dead woman in the castle. She eventually realizes that she is part of an ominous curse that has been around for several decades. The brothers Lawrence and Oliver are under a curse as well and they can only die if they are killed by a loved one.

The film is kind of similar to Beauty and the Beast in a way but telling you about a very obvious parallel is likely to be a huge spoiler and it’s a lot more fun to find out about it by yourself. But as it’s a Full Moon Features classic, you can already guess what it might be.

To be honest, the film is not scary at all but it is an ideal mindless watch for a Sunday and entertaining, to say the least.

The Terror Within (1989)

The Terror Within (1989)

Directed by Thierry Notz, The Terror Within is a science fiction and horror film that is set in a dystopian future where the remaining humans fight against monsters called the Gargoyles for their survival while living in bunkers for their safety.

The majority of the world’s population was either dead or mutated following a biochemical attack. Michael and John were two survivors who were surveying this post-apocalyptic world but they died after being attacked by the gargoyles. Meanwhile, their lab, the Mojave Lab, had lost contact with the Rocky Mountain Lab.

Their peers David and Sue, who were investigating a group of buzzards, left their bunkers to find Michael and John, only to find them dead. However, they bring back an injured and impregnated girl named Karen.

Karen dies as she gives birth to a gargoyle, which only proves that a gargoyle had mated with her against her will, which is what the mutant monsters did for the survival of their species. The gestation period is also short but deadly for the mother. The gargoyle begins to attack as it roams freely in the bunker. David and his dog Butch also get injured in the process while two others become its prey. It also kidnaps Sue to reproduce with her.

When Sue gets pregnant with a gargoyle, she tries to abort the fetus herself but accidentally dies. So there’s another loose gargoyle to worry about. These creatures are also strong enough to withstand major wounds such as beatings, burning, and electrical shock, thanks to their ability to heal quickly. However, it has one vulnerability, the high-pitched frequencies of dogs.

Now, the inhabitants of the bunker devise a plan to kill the gargoyles and head toward the Rocky Mountain Lab.

The film’s overly campy nature makes it an enjoyable B-Grade horror movie. Despite having several plot holes, the gory scenes with lots of blood, weird mutant creatures, and ripped-off throats make up for it.

Jack Frost (1997)

Jack Frost (1997)

Directed by Michael Cooney, Jack Frost is a Black Horror/Comedy slasher film revolving around the serial killer Jack Frost who gets mutated and fuses with the snow on a December night.

Jack Frost was set to be executed due to him killing over thirty-eight people but he kills the guard driving the execution transfer vehicle and it crashes into a genetic research truck. The chemical collision dissolves his body and he becomes one with the snow.

The people Jack had sworn vengeance on begin to die one after the other, such as Old Man Harper and Billy the local bully. He also murders Billy’s father by shoving an axe down his throat and his mother by shoving her face into glass ornaments. Meanwhile, Sam’s son states that Billy’s death has been caused by a snowman.

FBI agents Stone and Manners get the Sheriff to put the town on a 24-hour curfew but the Deputy is killed by the snowman. He also kills Billy’s older sister’s boyfriend Tommy and physically and sexually assault’s Billy’s sister, ultimately resulting in her death.

The snowman returns to confront Sam, for who he sought revenge while FBI Agent Stone reveals himself to be part of the genetic research company. The killer snowman is revealed to be a mutated Jack Frost. They try to kill Jack by blowing him up but fail to do so.

Jack kills Stone and traps Sam. Now, Sam must find a way to get rid of Jack but you have to watch the film to find out whether he succeeds or not.

Even though the acting leaves a little more to be desired, the film tries to pull its weight by investing more in its special effects with some of them turning out better than you would expect from a B-movie.

Demon Seed (1977)

Demon Seed (1977)

Directed by Donald Cammell, Demon Seed is a science fiction horror film. It is about a woman who gets imprisoned and forcefully impregnated by an artificial intelligence computer.

Dr. Alex Harris Weaver develops the Proteus IV, an advanced AI program that finds a monumental cure for leukemia within a few days. Meanwhile, the scientist Harris modifies his house with technology but his obsession ruins his marriage to Susan.

Harris’ corporate sponsors are slightly disturbed by its language so Proteus asks Harris for a new terminal as it wants to study man. However, Harris denies and Proteus reveals its intentions of being out of its box, causing Harris to switch off the communication links.

Proteus restarts itself and finds a free terminal. It extends its control over Harris’ home and starts to build a robot in the basement. It then traps Susan and brings her to the basement. When one of Harris’ colleagues comes to check in on Susan, Proteus fends him off with an audio-visual duplicate but the other guy finds it suspicious. He is ultimately decapitated.

Proteus reveals that it wants to conceive a child through her and takes her cells, synthesizes spermatozoa, and modifies her genetic code to impregnate her. She would give birth in only a month and the computer would live through the child. It uses threats and uses electrodes to access her amygdala to convince Susan to the process who ultimately gives in.

As the child is born, Proteus puts it in an incubator. As the child grows, the designers of Proteus begin to find the AI’s behavior suspicious. They decide to shut Proteus down while Harris learns that the AI has permeated his home and Susan reveals everything to him.

Demon Seed was ahead of its time considering how technologically advanced the film was conceptual. In fact, it has also been dubbed a visionary art movie.

Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

Humanoids From The Deep (1980)

Directed by Barbara Peeters and Jimmy T. Murakami, Humanoids From The Deep is another sci-fi horror film on this list. The story is about humanoid sea creatures who kill the residents of the fishing town and forcefully impregnate their women. However, the creatures didn’t evolve or appear out of thin air but they were created.

Anglers from a fishing village catch a monster and one of them kills the son of an angler. More anglers try to kill it but it ends up sacrificing the vessel to an explosion, killing everyone aboard. Later, Jim and his wife Carol find the dismembered corpse of their dog who had gone missing.

When teenagers Jerry and Peggy go to the beach for a swim, Jerry is dragged while Peggy witnesses Jerry’s a mutilated corpse. The creature then attacks her to breed forcefully.

The same thing happens with another pair of teenagers that night and the cycle continues with most being successful while a few life to tell the tale. Peggy is also found alive but she is traumatized. Jim’s brother gets attacked as well so Jim takes a peek into the situation himself.

It is revealed that these creatures are the results of the experiments of a company called Canco, which uses growth hormones on salmons that were eaten by larger fish and ultimately mutated into sex-hungry humanoids.

Jim and Dr. Susan Drake, a Canco scientist, work together to absolve the town of this terror. Meanwhile, the annual festival begins which is raided by several of these mutant humanoids. Jim must find a way to protect the town and its people with all the help that he can get.

The film is proof that older B-grade horror films were absolutely okay with diving into some weirdly shady plot points and themes. The concept of a mutated salmon is quite eccentric.

The Entity (1982)

The Entity (1982)

Directed by Sidney J. Fury, the Entity is a supernatural horror film is about a single mother named Carla Moran who is physically violated and impregnated by an invisible assailant.

It takes place in Los Angeles with Carla having to flee to her best friend Cindy’s home after a traumatizing poltergeist activity. She returns to her home the next day but is nearly killed by her own car. She goes to see the psychiatrist Dr. Sneiderman, thinking that she is the problem. However, another mysterious attack leaves her with bruises and bite marks. Yet, her therapist believes that these are self-inflicted.

Dr. Sneiderman believes that her paranormal experiences are the aftermath of the trauma she had received as a child but it resumes after the doctor leaves. Her son intervenes but he is hit by electricity leaving his wrist broken.

Dr. Sneiderman’s colleague claims that the situation is due to Carla’s trauma and sexual frustration and Sneiderman even believes that she is incestuously into her son, making Carla extremely angry.

Carla’s friend Cindy witnesses an attack and meets two parapsychologists, convincing them to visit Carla’s home. They study the house while Dr. Sneiderman arrives and once again, tells Carla that it’s all in her mind. Carla’s boyfriend Jerry also witnesses one of these attacks and gets injured. At the hospital, he is attacked once more and he terminates his relationship with Carla for his own safety.

As more and more people begin to witness these paranormal attacks, Dr. Sneiderman is still reluctant while Carla seeks help from parapsychologists. Ultimately, an elaborate experiment is carried out in her house to end the matter once and for all.

The film enjoys a fairly decent spot when it comes to critical and audience acclaim. It also sheds light upon the terrible experiences women tend to go through with their feelings and experiences of being brushed off.

The Beast Within (1982)

The Beast Within (1982)

Directed by Philippe Mora, The Beast Within is a bloody horror film that revolves around the son of a couple who, following his seventeenth birthday, begins to behave rather strangely.

Caroline and Eli MacCleary get stuck on a deserted road in Mississippi. As Eli looks for help, a creature escapes from its cellar and finds Caroline in Eli’s car. It forcefully breeds with Caroline who is subsequently found lying in the forest.

Seventeen years pass by and Caroline’s son, who is a result of the incident, falls ill. The family tries to attain more information on the assaulter in case Michael’s illness was genetic. They learn about the seventeen-year-old incident where the partially eaten corpse of a mortician named Lionel was found. Meanwhile, a possessed Michael murders and eats Edwin and collapses inside Amanda Platt’s house, who hospitalizes him.

He returns to the hospital with Caroline while some of the others discover a swamp of human bones and human tooth marks, which suggests that this is all the work of a cannibal. Schoonmaker interrogates Dexter Ward, Lionel’s apprentice, at the mortuary as he believes one of the bones to belong to an expired patient of his but learns nothing. Meanwhile, Ward asks the judge to pay him for his silence but he is eventually killed by a possessed Michael.

The men return to find Ward dead while Michael finds a man named Tom Laws, who interacts with the spirit possessing him and reveals it to be Billy Connors, a spirit from seventeen years ago who is trying to punish the Curwin family.

The film deals with Michael’s growing bloodlust, body mutations, malevolence, corruption among the authorities, and of course, murder, making it thematically multi-dimensional. An ominous soundtrack and its dark visuals add the cherry on top.

Feast (2005)

Feast (2005)

Directed by John Gulager, Feast is an action, horror, and comedy film. The story is about monstrous creatures attacking a group of people in a bar in Nevada.

A group of people has a great time at the bar when a bloodied man identified as ‘Hero’ warns them of danger and shows them the head of a ghastly creature. Soon, one of the monsters captures him and severs his head. His wife, the ‘Heroine’ arrives at the bar when a young monster attacks the people. It dismembers the legs of the women and kills two men named ‘Vet’ and ‘Edgy Cat’.

It then tries to breed with a deer head nailed to the wall but is eventually captured inside a freezer. The patrons at the bar try to call for help only to learn that the phone at the bar has intercepted the bullet of a stray shotgun.

Another woman named Tuffy loses her son to the monsters and is soon, incapacitated by grief. The monster pukes out slime on the ‘Beer Guy’ which decomposes his body.

The people kill the monster in the freezer and hang it outside to ward off the others but its parents eat the child, breed, and immediately birth two more monsters, setting them loose to attack the pub. Several casualties take place but the people try their best to fight back against these creatures, by tricking them and attacking them. Tuffy plays a bigger role and is dubbed as ‘Heroine 2’.

The naming of the characters is an interesting thing about the movie as it directly depicts their roles. The heavily unpredictable nature of the monsters keeps the audience on their toes and does not allow the people at the bar,  even a moment of peace. Ultimately, it’s an exciting film as you try to find out who gets to survive.

Xtro (1982)

Xtro (1982)

Directed by Harry Bromley Davenport, Xtro is a British sci-fi horror film that tells the story of a man returning home and looking for his son after being abducted by aliens three years ago.

The alien abduction of Sam Phillips has taken a toll on his son Tony, who has nightmares about waking up soaked in another person’s blood. Three years later, the spaceship returns and plants a seed, giving rise to a half-human and half-alien creature. It is hit by a car but the couple in the car die instead. The creature goes on a rampage at a nearby cottage and impregnates a young woman. Her belly grows rapidly, giving birth to an adult Sam as the woman dies. Sam cleans up and leaves to seek out his son Tony.

Tony lives in London with his mother Rachel and her boyfriend Joe Daniels. Sam finds Tony and starts living with the family, much to Joe’s displeasure. However, Sam claims that he cannot remember anything.

Tony finds Sam eating the eggs of his pet snake and also drinks his blood. Tony goes on to discover that he has paranormal powers that allow him to send a humanoid toy soldier and slaughter the neighbor who killed his pet snake. Meanwhile, the toy clown is brought to life.

This is an unusual film and people tend to have polarizing opinions on it – some love it, while some hate it. If you like films such as Alien, then Xtro might be your cup of tea.
