“Surface: Season 1” is a fictional story. “Surface,” is set in high-end San Francisco and stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Morning Show”) as Sophie, a woman who has suffered a terrible brain injury that has left her with acute memory loss and is thought to be the consequence of a suicide attempt. Sophie begins to doubt whether the reality she is given is the truth she has lived as she embarks on a mission to put the pieces of her life back together with the support of her husband and friends.

Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“The Haunting of Hill House”), Stephan James (“If Beale Street Could Talk”), Ari Graynor (“I’m Dying Up Here”), Oscar nominee Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Secrets & Lies”), François Arnaud (“I Killed My Mother”), and Millie Brady (“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies”) join Mbatha-Raw in the ensemble cast.
Apple Studios and Hello Sunshine collaborated to create “Surface” for Apple TV+. West, who also acts as executive producer, is the creator and writer of the original series. Hello Sunshine’s executive producers are Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter. Sam Miller (“I May Destroy You”), an Emmy Award nominee, directed four episodes of the series, including the pilot, and also acts as executive producer. Episodes were also directed by Kevin Sullivan, Jennifer Morrison, and Tucker Gates.
The new series joins a long list of high-profile collaborations between Apple TV+ and Hello Sunshine, including the limited series “The Last Thing He Told Me,” executive produced by and starring Jennifer Garner, and based on The New York Times bestselling novel; “My Kind of Country,” a groundbreaking global search for unconventional and extraordinary country music talent and the platform’s first competition series; and the Emmy, SAG, and Critics Choice Award-winning series “The CW.”
