The Makers Of ‘Spiral: From The Book Of Saw’ Have Made An Intelligent Choice

Darren Lynn Bousman directed ‘Spiral: From the Book of Saw’ will hit the big screen this May. This ninth instalment in the ‘Saw’ franchise stars Chris Rock, Samuel L Jackson, and Marisol Nichols. After already dropping the first look of the film where we see Rock seemingly investigating another one of Jigsaw’s mind-bending games that always end in gruesome deaths, the film is already giving the fans more to look forward to. Although the film trailer is not yet out, we have already heard that director Bousman has compared it to Brad Pitt starrer ‘Seven’ (1995). As we get closer to May, we now also have a word of some more things that fans can expect.

How the ‘Saw’ franchise stands out from other film series

Although the film’s overall plot is not known with surety, images released tell us some things about the upcoming film that may imply that ‘Spiral’ will be different from the previous eight instalments in the right way. The horror genre has seen many filmmakers creating a universe of their own, with many gaining a wide fanbase such as ‘Halloween,’ ‘Friday the 13th’, ‘Lake Placid’ etc. Most of these films loosely tie up to each other but can be watched as standalone movies as well. However, that is not the case with the ‘Saw’ franchise. If one were to watch these films, they would have to follow the sequence of films released before, courtesy of the filmmakers who have made an effort to consider almost every character- big or small- and tying them up with the main plot of the film.

    Back to square one

‘Spiral,’ as it seems from the images released, has made the wise decision to take the franchise back to its origins. How this will pan out is not something we are sure of. Still, one thing is for certain that it can shed off the excess weightage of its predecessors and might be the only film in the franchise (apart from maybe the first one) that can be watched independently of any research into the ‘Saw’ universe.
