The Northman, co-written by Eggers and Sjón and directed by Robert Eggers, is an upcoming American epic historical film. It stars Alexander Skarsgard as Viking prince Amleth, who goes off on a mission of vengeance after his father got murdered by his uncle at the turn of the tenth century in Iceland.
In “The Northman,” Skarsgard plays Amleth, a Viking prince who was a youngster when his father, King Horvendill (Ethan Hawke), was assassinated. Years later, Amleth swears to avenge his father’s death and free his mother, Queen Gudrun (Nicole Kidman), from Fjölnir, his father’s assassin (Claes Bang). Anya Taylor-Joy, Bjork, Ralph Ineson, and Willem Dafoe round out the supporting cast.
Between August and December 2020, filming took place in Ireland, in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Focus Features will release the film in theatres in the United States on April 22, 2022, while Universal Pictures will distribute it abroad.
It’s Robert Eggers’ follow-up to The Witch and The Lighthouse, and it’s been a long time coming. Despite just directing two feature films, the American filmmaker has established himself as one of the current masters of horror, known for his creepy screenplays, atmospheric photography, and hair-raising twists. The Northman is intended to be as terrifying as its predecessors, and its setting—10th-century Iceland’s cold forests and jagged beaches—seems to match The Witch’s lonely woods and The Lighthouse’s windswept coastlines.
This new release, however, is on a much larger scale than anything Eggers has accomplished previously. Adding to our delight? The fact that he collaborated on the screenplay with Oscar-nominated Icelandic songwriter, novelist, and poet Sjón, as well as Oscar-nominated cinematographer JarinBlaschke, who worked with Eggers on both of his melancholy thrillers.
Amleth is played by Alexander Skarsgard as an adult, while Oscar Novak portrays him as a child. Nicole Kidman plays Queen Gudrun, the latter’s mother; Ethan Hawke plays King Aurvandil, the latter’s father; and Danish actor Claes Bang, well known for his captivating leading role in 2017’s The Square, plays Fjolnir, the latter’s wicked uncle. They’ll be joined by two actors who have appeared in Eggers’ past films: Anya Taylor-Joy (The Witch) as Olga (“a character Eggers wishes to retain partly a mystery,” according to Entertainment Weekly) and Willem Dafoe (The Lighthouse) as Heimir the Fool, a malicious figure in the royal court). The icing on the cake? The rumor that Björk, an Icelandic legend, has been cast as Seeress, a snarling, ornately-dressed witch, has gone viral.
