Plot- After missing from an elite beach resort filled with the country’s wealthiest and most influential people in 1997, Argentine reporter and photographer José Luis Cabezas was kidnapped, tortured, and murdered. His assassination came just days after he published an image of notorious tycoon Alfredo Yabrán, who was rumored to have corrupt government ties and hidden business operations, as well as a reputation for allowing no one to photograph him. The film looks at the political climate in Argentina at the time, the Cabezas murder investigation, and the underlying corruption and conspiracies that stretched far beyond anyone’s expectations.
The actual story: Cabezas, a photojournalist for the weekly magazine Noticias, was discovered dead in a torched rental car outside of Pinamar, where he was working on a story, on January 25, handcuffed and scorched. He was one of the first photojournalists to capture Alfredo Yabrán, a well-known and reclusive tycoon dubbed “the leader of the Argentine mafia” by a prominent politician.
Cabezas’ assassination triggered memories of gruesome deaths during Argentina’s “dirty war” in the 1980s, infuriating journalists who marched to the streets in protest and pressed the government for a full inquiry. After it was discovered that he had received phone calls from Yabrán, the Justice Minister was compelled to resign. Current and former police officers, as well as Yabrán’s security chief, have all been arrested in connection with the murder. Threats have been made against journalists covering the probe.
On February 2, 2000, the Dolores appellate court sentenced eight men to life in prison for their roles in the murder. Yabrán, who committed suicide in 1998, was judged to be the mastermind behind the murder, according to the court.
