The Promise Of A Comedy-Horror In ‘Werewolves Within’

After being critically acclaimed following the Sundance World Premiere of Scare me(“Smart, well-acted and suitably chilling” as posted by Rotten Tomatoes). Josh Ruben directed Werewolves Within, a horror-comedy which will hit limited theaters on June 25th before sending it to VOD/Digital July 2.

    The Plot

The film is set in the backdrop of Ubisoft’s virtual reality video game that was set in an imaginary mediaeval town. The film tells us the story of a small town where a proposed gas pipeline ends up creating a division in the small hamlet of Beaverfield. The plot proceeds to show how a snowstorm traps the residents of Beaverfield, together inside the local inn. The newly arrived postal worker Cecily (Milana Vayntrub) and forest ranger Finn (Sam Richardson) take up the job to maintain peace and decipher the reality behind a certain creature which is very mysterious in nature and has begun to terrorize the community.

    The director’s take

Ruben says that Werewolves Within is about the monster in all of us. At the same time he expresses his love for the Coen Brothers, and Arachnophobia and Hot Fuzz.

Ruben reportedly grew up near the same small town where he shot the film. He said that as a kid, he’d freak himself out, making up monster stories, running through the woods, pretending he was Chief Brody who would fight all creatures in the brush, he loved Jaws as much as he loved horror. He added that his hometown experience, where his neighbors were aware of what he would be upto, whether he liked it or not, ended up making his work in Werewolves very personal and unique. “But, as much as I love horror movies, nothing scares me more than people.” Rueben said.
