Ben Foster plays boxer Harry Haft, who tries to continue after fighting to survive in WWII concentration camps in Barry Levinson’s biographical film.
Ben Foster has consistently given incredibly authentic performances in films such as Leave No Trace, Hell or High Water, and The Messenger. In The Survivor, he plays a man who has been bent, bruised, but never broken by his Holocaust experience. This stunning Barry Levinson picture, based on a true story, proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Foster is one of his generation’s best actors.
When the Nazis seize Poland, Jewish Harry Haft (Foster) is deported to Auschwitz, a concentration camp. Because he is a solidly built guy, a seductive but sadistic soldier (Billy Magnussen) offers him an unthinkable choice: fight fellow captives in a boxing ring for his captors’ entertainment, or die. The victor of the battle is eligible to fight again. The loser is either shot or sentenced to death in a gas chamber. How far will Harry’s determination to live carry him? What will he do to get away from the death that surrounds him?
These traumatic moments are interwoven with two key later stages in Haft’s life by Levinson. Harry has arrived in America in 1949. He goes back into the only life he knows, boxing, after being shattered by the camps. A trainer (Danny DeVito) assists him in preparing for his battle against Rocky Marciano, which appears to be a lost cause for him. During this time, he meets Vicky Krieps, a woman dedicated to assisting survivors in finding their loved ones (also at the Bergman Island Festival), but their personal traumas make the relationship a daily struggle. Later, in 1963, Harry struggles to make peace with his worst memories and find a way to love again.
Levinson, who is a master at delving into the depths of American masculinity, leads Foster to deliver a performance that spans the gamut of terrible violence to nuanced emotional complexity. The impact is sad, especially when combined with Hans Zimmer’s soaring score.
Barry Levinson is a Baltimore native. Already a well-known screenwriter, his credits include the Oscar-nominated… He made his directorial debut with Diner (1979) and Justice for All (79). (82).
