Warner Bros. Pictures’ Tom & Jerry creeps up to the top of the box office with a strong performance its debut weekend, earning a whopping $13.7 million in its opening days. Critics found this to be a surprising feat considering that the pandemic is still a factor but, its performance could make struggling theatres more hopeful. What’s more interesting is that the film achieved this even though the film simultaneously released HBO Max. Its feature is a hybrid of live-action, and animation played a crucial role in attracting viewers in swarming numbers.
The Box Office Top 10
Tom & Jerry was not the only film that enthralled the kids this weekend. Universal Pictures took the second spot behind Warner Bros. with The Croods: A New Age, earning $1.2 million. John Lee Hancock’s crime thriller The Little Things took third place with $925,000 while getting a co-release on HBO Max.
The top 5 for the week comprises Patty Jenkin’s DCEU film Wonder Woman 1984, which earned $710,000 in its opening weekend, followed by Robert Lorenz’s The Marksman ($700,000) for fifth place. Shaka King’s Judas and the Black Messiah ($500,000) took sixth place as one of the highly anticipated movie theatres and HBO Max co-releases. Paul W. S. Anderson’s video-game-inspired film Monster Hunter grossed a generous $460,000. Robin Wright made his steady mark on the eighth spot with his indie film Land($355,000). The ninth place went to Tom Hanks’ News of the World. Tim Hill’s The War With Grandpa had already established itself as a pandemic mainstay and this, week cemented that title in the tenth position.

Tom & Jerry: A cut above the rest in terms of sales
Despite the insurgency of generously grossing films in the top 10 this week, Tom & Jerry is a clear winner with its surprising sales, with a difference of approximately $12 million when compared to The Croods: A New Age, which took the second position.
