Top Boy, essentially Britain’s equivalent to The Wire or a grime Gomorrah, has amassed a tremendous fanbase since its debut on Channel 4 in 2011. It now has sleb superfans like Jay-Z, Noel Gallagher, and Drake, as well as a showrunner, Ronan Bennett, an Irish novelist and screenwriter who has been involved from the beginning.
Its street-level authenticity is one of its main draws, as it delves into the machinations of drug lords, their bosses, and the hapless foot soldiers trapped in the web, even children who lose their innocence in order to survive. It follows Dushane (Ashley Walters, Bullet Boy, Bulletproof, Grange Hill) and Sully (Kane Robinson, aka grime superstar Kano) as they develop a drug empire in inner-city London on the fictional Hackney estate of Summerhouse.
Another important character is the cruel Jamie Tovell (Michael Ward), who became a surrogate father to his young brothers after his parents died and is a serious contender for the title of “top kid” on the estate. Shelley (Lil Simz), who plays a single mother and caretaker for Dushane’s ailing mother, gives the show a strong female voice. His fondness for her develops into a romance over time.
Top Boy takes us on a number of different experiences in a tough city, from highly qualified immigrants who can’t find a legitimate job and wind up dealing with drug traffickers to honest people who are hounded by UK immigration police despite having all of their documents in order. It’s a deep dive into an often-underappreciated London, telling moving stories about those who are born oppressed and marginalized in society.
This season’s tagline is “Loyalty Before Everything.” Dushane and Shelley were planning to start a new life together at the close of last season, but the trouble is brewing: a huge split has developed between the power-hungry Dushane and Sully. Jamie is behind bars, and Dushane is attempting to form an alliance with him on the outside. Will Jamie, however, agree? Is Dushane in danger of going to prison (or worse)? He’s the target of an undercover operation, and the rival London Fields gang is hellbent on aggressive expansion.
Expect additional representations of poverty and power, as well as a look at how and why people become involved in crime. Expect the women’s stories to take center stage in the next season as well. Not only are the want-to-be crime lords fighting for survival, but so are those around them.
