Jim Mickle, the show’s creator, brought Jeff Lemire’s Sweet Tooth comic book saga to life for Netflix earlier this summer. Thanks to its adorable characters, the accurately termed “Mad Max meets Bambi” futuristic tale evoked astonishment and tugged at your heartstrings. Season one put them through the ringer emotionally, with perilous cliffhangers at the end. Thankfully, Netflix just improved my day by announcing that Sweet Tooth has been renewed for a second season!
Season two, like the first, will consist of eight one-hour episodes. It’s been both wonderful and heartening to see how people all over the world have fallen in love with their deer-boy, Mickle said. They’re ecstatic to continue working with Netflix and to continue following Gus and his buddies on their incredible journey.

Sweet Tooth season one is set a decade after “The Great Crumble,” a virus that ravaged civilization and wiped away a major portion of the population. It is narrated in a fairy tale format by James Brolin. It happened at the same time as the advent of hybrids, or children who are half human and half animal. Because of the coincidence, many people believe hybrids are to responsible for the illness, and humans pursue them out of terror. Gus, a juvenile deer-boy hybrid, befriends solitary Jepperd after growing up in the comfort of his secluded forest home. The duo travels across the country in search of answers, learning a lot about the world’s perils as well as themselves.
In this series executive produced by Robert Downey Jr., Adeel Akhtar, Aliza Vellani, Stefania LaVie Owen, Dania Ramirez, Neil Sandilands, and Will Fortestar in key roles. Season 2 will feature Oanh Ly as a co-executive producer.
Mickle has a knack for eliciting emotional resonance in even the most depressing of situations (our review). Gus and Jepperd were in a bad situation after the first eight episodes, especially for the little hybrid offspring. That means Season 2 can’t come soon enough!
