Wolverine is one of Marvel Comics’ most popular characters. Wolverine is a mutant recognized for his improved physical state, healing abilities, adamantium claws, and animal-like berserker wrath. He is most commonly linked with the X-Men.
After the Vietnam War, American fiction started to include a number of fierce anti-heroes. This cliche became extremely popular, and Wolverine became an instant fan favorite. Unlike other superheroes like Spider-Man or Batman, his propensity to kill gave his character a dark edge. This, combined with his melancholy, solitary demeanor, established him as a model for many future antihero figures.
Wolverine has a habit of giving in to his berserker wrath. We must first examine his psyche in order to comprehend why he enters this state. Not only has he had a violent past, but his mutation’s animal instincts have also played a role. After all, the wolverine is a predatory animal.
Even though Wolverine attempts to manage his wrath, there are times when you simply have to let go. In that regard, he is similar to the Hulk, only he is more aware of his actions. This rage has the potential to be both his greatest power and his greatest vulnerability. He can, however, let his wildness run free when fighting because of his great healing skills, so he does not have to worry about being terminally injured. As a result, he is easily one of the most dangerous opponents to face. The animal within is free after the claws are removed.
When most people think of Wolverine, Hugh Jackman is usually the first person that comes to mind. He was a huge hit in both the X-Men cartoons and the live-action films produced by 20th Century Fox. He even has a live-action trilogy of his own.
We will go over 9 instances in the animated series and live-action movie where Wolverine unleashed his berserker anger on his foes in this video.

Wolverine’s Rage In Marvel Anime: X-Men
Written by Warren Ellis, Marvel Anime is a four-part anime superhero television series. For the production, Marvel Entertainment collaborated with Japanese anime studios Madhouse and Sony Pictures Entertainment Japan. The story features Japan as the setting for its events.
It follows the death of Jean Grey. She had fallen victim to the terrible influence of the Inner Circle, resulting in the Dark Phoenix taking control over her.
After Armor becomes one of the several young mutants to get abducted in Japan, Professor X reassembles the X-Men. They travel to Japan to face the U-Men, the perpetrators of the abduction. It is revealed that the U-Men were abducting them to harvest their organs. Meanwhile, the Inner Circle prepares their next plot which the X-Men must deal with.
The young mutant Takeo Sasaki, the son of Professor X and Yui Sasaki, had a power that could alter the fabric of reality itself. The U-Men, (backed by Mastermind from the Inner Circle) wanted to exploit his power.
To stop the Inner Circle’s rampage, the X-Men fought their members. One such iconic fight was Wolverine’s fight against Neuron.
Neuron has the ability to amplify the senses of his opponents to a superhuman proportion, which ends up killing them. Wolverine takes advantage of this to unleash and amplify his famous berserker rage.
While subdued by Neuron, Wolverine asks Beast to hit him constantly as he steps into his animal instincts and rage. His biceps tear through Neuron’s attacks and he goes crazy, beating the villain up with his adamantium claws that sound like swords slashing through the air. His eyes boast a glowing red and Wolverine wrecks the life out of Neuron.
Interestingly enough, this depiction is very similar to the way Wolverine’s rage has been written in the comics, which makes it even better.
In the end, Wolverine keeps mutilating Neuron when Beast has to step in to stop him. But Wolverine turns to attack Beast instead and only stops when he is called by his own name: Logan. He does say that he was only pretending to be enraged at his partner.
Rage of Wolverine [Logan: 2007]
The 2017 superhero movie Logan is the final installment in the Wolverine trilogy. It is heavily inspired by Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s comic storyline ‘Old Man Logan’ which is based in an alternate future where Wolverine is ill and aged, to the point that his inherent healing abilities have taken a huge hit. Meanwhile, Charles Xavier and Wolverine must defend Laura, a young mutant, from the Reavers. She has powers similar to that of Logan.
Logan agrees to escort Laura, a refugee, to the border. Transient cyborg chief Donald Pierce wants Laura. It is revealed that the Transient created her to be a mutant alongside several other kids to use their powers. In fact, Logan’s DNA was used in Laura, which technically makes her his daughter.
An encounter with Transigen kills off Charles Xavier but Logan and Laura manage to escape with his body. Logan buries him but passes out soon after due to his failing health. Laura takes him to a known doctor and they find other mutant children trying to cross into Canada. However, the Reavers ambush those children and it is up to Logan to help them out.
Logan overdoses on a serum that has the ability to boost his strength and temporarily enhance his healing abilities. Meanwhile, the kids try to fight off the Reavers but there are too many of them. An enhanced Wolverine runs across the woods, mutilating and killing the Reavers one after the other.
He is able to sustain their attacks and several injuries, thanks to the serum. He unleashes his inner wolf to solo the Reavers. No matter how many bullets they pierce into him, Wolverine remains unmatched. His berserker rage alongside his healing and adamantium claws helps him become almost as strong as he was in his prime. Laura helps him out as well. In the end, he is able to slaughter most of the Reavers before the effects of the serum wear off.
Wolverine vs Hulk [Hulk vs Wolverine: 2009]
The 2009 animated movie Hulk versus Wolverine gives the fans an opportunity to enjoy a brutal battle between a berserker Hulk and a berserker Wolverine. The movie is deeper than it sounds though. Not only does Wolverine have to fight someone as powerful and big as Hulk, but, he also has to try to spare his life as a living weapon.
During the initial sequences of the movie, Wolverine, or Logan finds himself in a small town that has been subjected to large-scale destruction – infrastructure and civilians alike. He learns that the creature who caused this crossed over to Canada from the US and it is called the Hulk. However, the sketchy intel makes them think that the US is hiding something.
Logan sniffs the air in a car where the Hulk had attacked and locks on to his toxic scent. After a certain man tells him to stop the monster, he wears his costume and takes off to find the big guy. When the pilot notices a large crater in the middle of the forest, Wolverine jumps out as he believes that Hulk must have been nearby to have caused this crater. He then sniffs the scent of Hulk in the crater and tries to track it down. He follows the big footprints which gradually turn into the size of his own foot.
He is met with a frail-looking, scrawny, and scared man. The man cries and Wolverine asks him if he has seen a large monster but the scared man backs himself into a corner. Wolverine closes in on him and realizes that it is the same toxic scent. He threatens the man with his claws while he begs to be left alone. Just then, the man’s eyes turn green and he throws Wolverine into a tree. He transforms into the Hulk and sends Wolverine flying over the mountain with a punch.
Wolverine lands in a crater and Hulk follows him there. His adamantium claws are unable to overpower Hulk’s abnormal strength as the big guy smashes the ground and causes the mountain cliff to break. Wolverine falls into a river and Hulk follows suit. They fight under the water but Wolverine is severely outmatched in strength.
They both arrive onshore and Wolverine ambushes him. He is finally able to land some bloody hits on Hulk as he slashes through his back and stabs him constantly. However, Hulk attacks him with huge chunks of rock and overpowers him once again, claiming himself to be the strongest there is.
Hulk beats Wolverine down to the ground, bloodying his face, and walks away. Meanwhile, Wolverine replenishes his strength and energy and charges at the Hulk again. This time, he is way angrier than before and manages to match Hulk not only in terms of combat but also in terms of rage. Wolverine knocks Hulk to the ground and stabs his chest. He slashes Hulk all over his body and easily dodges every attack by the big guy. After all, the Hulk has a lot of brute strength but he just does not have Wolverine’s combat techniques.
Wolverine attacks fast and quickly to hurt Hulk and Hulk is unable to do anything about it because his huge structure decreases his speed. Finally, Wolverine is able to stare down at him, i.e. until Deadpool comes with his crew, who shoot tranquilizers at the two rage monsters, causing them to blackout.
Wolverine Greatest Escape [X-Men Apocalypse 2016]
Wolverine has a short but intense cameo role in the 2016 live-action superhero film X-Men: Apocalypse. The story follows the revival of an ancient mutant called En Sabah Nur or Apocalypse. The state of humanity makes him realize that humanity has lost its way and he decides to remake the world. So now, the X-Men must defeat him and stop the Apocalypse.
En Sabah Nur causes disturbances all over the world. He gets Psylocke and Angel on his side. He also manages to get his hands on Magneto or Erik’s daughter and on seeing the true extent of his power, she joins him.
Xavier contacts Erik when En Sabah Nur accesses Cerebro and forces Xavier to make the countries with nuclear power launch their nuclear arsenals into space. Meanwhile, the forces of Colonel William Stryker capture Quicksilver, Mystique, Beast, and Moira X for interrogation. To save their comrades, Cyclops, Jean Grey, and Nightcrawler follow them covertly to Alkali Lake.
Stryker had conducted an experiment that bonded adamantium with Wolverine’s skeleton and wiped out his memories. Jean Grey uses her powers to free a captive Wolverine to use his powers and obliterate Stryker’s forces. And it works because what we get to see after this is absolute madness. Wolverine goes crazy as he kills Stryker’s men while sustaining no damage to himself at all. He’s a complete beast here.
The entire sequence is super violent and unlike any other Wolverine scene from the live-action movies. If the directors showed as much blood as Wolverine actually spilled, the movie might’ve not gotten its PG-13 rating.
He pins the men to the walls, cuts off their throats, slashes their chests, and pierces through their bodies. This allows the captive X-Men to escape but before Wolverine can take out his berserker rage on the outside world, Jean Grey taps into his memories to subdue him. In the end, he gets rid of the wiring stuck to his body and his headset and runs off into the woods.
Wolverine vs Sabertooth [X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2009]
X-Men Origins: Wolverine kicks off the Wolverine trilogy. The storyline follows Wolverine’s childhood, his entanglement with William Stryker and Team X, his feud with his half-brother Sabertooth, and his body bonding with his signature adamantium claws.
It all begins in 1845 when James Howlett loses his father. The pain causes his mutation to activate, giving him bone claws with which he kills the man who killed his father. However, the man, Thomas Logan, claims that he is James’ real father. Soon, James flees with Thomas Logan’s other son Victor Creed who has healing abilities like him with long and sharp nails.
From their experiences together, James sees how violent of a human being Victor was. Victor tries to rape a Vietnamese lady and kills a senior officer. James, oblivious to Victor’s actions, stands up for him but due to his half-brother being guilty, puts himself in the line of fire.
Major William Stryker then recruits them and makes them a part of Team X, a mutant group. This is where James begins to use Logan as his alias. However, the violent nature of Victor and the mutant group along with their disregard for human life causes an empathetic Victor to leave.
Six years pass by and Logan lives with his girlfriend Kayla Silverfox. He learns that someone had been targeting Team X and that due to his involvement with them in the past, he was also at risk. One day, he finds Kayla’s bloodied body and realizes that it’s either Victor Creed or Sabertooth. He tracks his half-brother down to avenge his lover and the two of them fight.
However, Logan is severely outmatched by Victor and is only able to get a few hits in. Victor plays around with Logan and does so without much effort. In the end, he buries Logan under several logs, throws him out in front of a truck, then breaks his bone claws with his feet.
To fulfill his revenge, Logan undergoes an operation that binds his skeleton with the indestructible metal adamantium. However, the completion causes Stryker to order the erasure of Logan’s memories to be turned into Stryker’s weapon. Logan overhears this and escapes.
Later, he learns from the Team X members Dukes that Victor was still working for Stryker and helped him retrieve mutants for his experiments. And that Gambit was the only one who knew where it was and had escaped from the island before. Logan finds Gambit and heads to the island where he finds out that Kayla is alive and Stryker is using her in exchange for guaranteeing her sister’s safety. He then comes across Victor.
Victor notices Logan’s new claws and mocks him. He says that Logan will never be able to kill him but Logan turns out to be more than just a match for his half-brother as he intends to cut his head off. First things first, he pierces his adamantium claws through Sabertooth’s palms. At this point, Logan is a lot stronger than his brother as he desperately wishes to avenge Kayla for the wrongdoing that has been done to her. However, right before an enraged Logan hits Victor with the killing blow, Wade who is now called Weapon XI, crashes the party.
Wolverine vs MRD [Wolverine and the X-Men]
The 2009 animated series Wolverine and the X-Men is the fourth adaptation of all five X-Men animated series. The first episode ‘Hindsight Part 1’ kicks off with Wolverine and Rogue having an argument. Wolverine then meets with Charles Xavier and Jean Grey but his presence gives them headaches, literally. Suddenly, there’s a mysterious explosion.
Not only does it destroy the mansion but, Charles and Jean disappear as well. Shocked and traumatized due to this catastrophic event, the X-Men are forced to disband. Ultimately, they all go their separate ways. Several of them also go on to emotionally detach themselves from their former team and community.
A year passes by. The Mutant Response Division, or the MRD, which is a government-sanctioned organization, comes into play. It has a purpose – to detain existing mutants. It begins to capture mutants residing all over the planet as several human beings had actually protested for it.
Wolverine is hunted down and a family that helped him is arrested. This event causes Wolverine to go after the M.R.D. Before doing so, he allies himself with his former teammate, Beast. They go to the jail where some of the mutants were being held and free them.
Following this, Wolverine decides to free the other X-Men and fight the M.R.D. and the fight turns out to be an unfortunate event for this government-supported organization. Their actions have caused Wolverine to unleash his berserker rage and now, they must pay the price.
Wolverine ambushes the M.R.D. and takes on all of them at once. The regular humans are no match for this powerful mutant who just happens to have claws that can cut through vibranium. Some of them try to escape in a chopper so Wolverine lunges at them, hoping to incapacitate the tires with his claws. But, he misses due to the distance.
Just then, a net is thrown at him. Of course, a net won’t render the man useless but a smoke attack just might. However, that does not happen either. Wolverine comes out unscathed and the others try to board the chopper and escape as well. But, Wolverine throws the smoke object inside the chopper, causing it to come crashing down.
Logan vs X-24: A Clone Of Logan In His Prime [Logan 2017]
We’ve already covered Logan in this list but he’s not the only guy in this film who is capable of berserker rage. It is only natural that a perfect clone of his would have the same violence in him.
In the movie, Charles Xavier suffers from dementia which results in him having destructive telepathic seizures with heavy collateral damage. He is taken care of by Logan and Caliban.
Logan is asked to escort a former biotechnology nurse called Gabriela Lopez from Alkali-Transigen. He also has to help out Laura, a girl with powers similar to his as his DNA had been used to create her.
Logan finds Gabriela to be dead. Her killer, Donald Pierce confronts him as he wants to seize Laura. With Laura technically being his daughter due to the shared DNA, Logan also feels an emotional attachment to her.
He takes her to Oklahoma City but the Reavers follow them there. Xavier suffers from another seizure that incapacitates everyone around him, barring Logan and Laura. They kill everyone, inject Xavier with his medication, and flee. Meanwhile, the head of Transigen, Dr. Zander Rice arrives to help out Pierce.
Transigen had created a clone of Logan called the X-24. It has the powers of Logan at his prime and is the organization’s ultimate weapon. He unleashes the clone on the weakened Logan. It kills a family Logan had helped. It also kills Charles Xavier and captures Laura.
X-24 is berserk from the get-go. He is full of rage and violence. And unlike Logan, he lacks a conscience. While Logan takes Charles’ body, a couple of men who had business with the man Will Munson (from the farmer family Logan had helped) square up to X-24, and they have to face the worst of the clone’s attacks.
One of the men shoots him but of course, a bullet can’t take him down. X-24 goes berserk on them, attacking with his claws and decapitating them one after the other. He mutilates them with no remorse and Transigen must step in to stop their weapon from its carnage.
Logan goes after X-24 not in this scene but during the fight across the woods against the Reavers. However, even after being boosted by the serum, X-24 is stronger than a Logan who is trying his best. He had an adamantium bullet in-store with which he had intended to commit suicide in the past. After a rageful x-24 impaled Logan into a large tree branch, Laura shoots X-24 with that bullet, killing him.
Wolverine Beats Up Shingen [The Wolverine 2013]
The 2013 live-action superhero film is the second installment of the Wolverine trilogy. It takes inspiration from the 1982 comic series Wolverine, by Frank Miller and Chris Claremont.
The movie follows a Wolverine who has been stripped of his healing powers. He has to battle his guilt from having to end Jean Grey’s life and go against a lethal samurai in Japan.
In 1945, Logan had saved a man named Ichiro Yashida from the Nagasaki atomic bombing. In the present day, Ichiro is the CEO of a technology conglomerate but, he is dying of cancer. He sends a mutant named Yukio who can foresee people’s deaths to Logan, as Yukio had seen a vision of Logan dying while covered in blood. Ichiro wants to repay the life debt he owes Logan.
Logan comes to Tokyo and meets Ichiro’s son Shingen and his granddaughter, Mariko. Meanwhile, Ichiro’s physician introduces something in Logan’s body but Logan thinks it is just a dream.
Ichiro dies and Logan attends the funeral. Yakuza gangsters try to kidnap Mariko. Logan escapes with her and he is shot, but his wounds don’t heal as quickly as they should. They escape.
Meanwhile, Dr. Green demands the two be found. Mariko gets captured again and Yukio and Logan track down Mariko’s fiance Noburo Mori. He confesses that it’s all under his conspiracy with Shingen as Ichiro’s death left Mariko under the company’s control instead of Shingen.
Yukio and Logan arrive in the estate and use an X-Ray machine to find out that a robotic parasite has been implanted in Logan, courtesy of Dr. Green. This parasite is responsible for rendering his healing abilities inefficient. Logan cuts himself to take it out but Yukio believes that’s how he will die. Meanwhile, Shingen attacks them and Yukio manages to hold him off until Wolverine’s plan succeeds and he takes on Shingen himself with his healing intact.
Shingen wields a dual katana but it is no match for Wolverine’s claws. Shingen turns out to be super skillful and is able to hit Wolverine with several lethal blows, but is dumbstruck when he watches the mutant’s skin heal on its own.
Wolverine is superior when it comes to raw strength but Shingen kind of holds up as a skilled, tactical fighter. He manages to slash through Wolverine’s abdomen, samurai style. Normally, it would have killed anyone but Wolverine’s skin just repairs itself.
Wolverine gains the upper hand again but chooses not to kill Shingen. As he walks away, Shingen stabs him from behind. When Wolverine does not die, Shingen asks him if he is a monster. However, this time, Wolverine shows no mercy and kills him.
Wolverine Kills Sabertooth [X-Men: The Animated Series]
Season 1 Episode 4 of X-Men: The Animated Series focuses on an intense battle between Wolverine and Sabertooth. In the end, a vengeful Wolverine almost ends up killing Sabertooth.
Charles Xavier probes into Sabertooth’s mind to understand why he is full of rage. However, the demons in his mind turn out to be Wolverine’s attacks, and Sabertooth is then tied down in the infirmary.
Wolverine demands Sabertooth to be sent away but Xavier explains how he is trying to work with him by curing his mind. Wolverine refuses to assist Xavier with Sabertooth. Meanwhile, Magneto claims that the mutants are in their second stage of evolution, which will turn them from homo sapiens to homo superiors. Xavier believes that he will soon attack. When it happens, Xavier heads to face him with the X-Men but he leaves Jubilee behind to watch over Sabertooth.
After a tough struggle, Xavier is able to incapacitate Magneto. Later, Senator Kelly holds a press conference over the Mutant Registration Act. Sabertooth and Jubilee watch it on television where Sabertooth threatens to kill Kelly. Jubilee notices how Sabertooth’s wrists have been hurting from the shackles and tries to loosen them but Sabertooth takes the opportunity and grabs her. He confesses that he has been faking his mental improvement and that Magneto sent him to take over Xavier’s institute. He threatens her to free him and tries to kill her, but, Wolverine arrives just in time to ruin his parade.
The two of them fight and Wolverine is initially subdued. Sabertooth knows that he does not have an attack against Wolverine’s adamantium claws so he holds his wrists and tries to use the same claws to attack Wolverine himself. Meanwhile, the other X-Men reach the institute after their battle with Magneto. They hear the ensuing fight in the other room.
Wolverine enters his state of berserker rage and overpowers Sabertooth. He mocks Sabertooth for being second to him and kicks him far away. He then closes in on him, with a 100% intent to take his life once and for all. However, Charles Xavier arrives and stops Wolverine from giving in to his negative thoughts and instincts that were fueled by revenge.
What did you think of Wolverine with his rage unleashed? Did you enjoy this video? If yes, then don’t forget to like and comment on this video. Till then, goodbye. And have a nice one!
