The premiere of Vol. 2 of Netflix’s Untold sports documentary series is approaching. The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, a two-part Manti Te’o documentary, will debut this volume, which follows Vol. 1 from last year, on August 16. The Rise and Fall of AND1, a documentary about streetball, will then air on August 23, followed by Operation Flagrant Foul, a film by Tim Donaghy, on August 30, and Race of the Century on September 6. The complete trailer for Operation Flagrant Foul was released on Monday, and it shows how open-minded Donaghy (seen above in an interview for this) and some of the other interviewees are, with Donaghy’s remark that “Man, did I f*** my life up” striking out in particular.
Operation Flagrant Foul, which David Terry Fine directed, has been shown to us, and it is undoubtedly worth seeing if you’re interested in the Donaghy incident and how it affected the NBA. It’s also a fascinating look back, particularly at a time when sports betting is now much more acceptable and legal, and several leagues, including the NBA, have “approved sports betting partners.”
One aspect of Operation Flagrant Foul that stands out is how openly the various interviewees discuss their own extralegal behaviour while simultaneously showing contradictions in their claims (especially regarding their own behaviours in meetings with the other conspirators). During their conversation with AA last month about a range of themes related to Untold Vol. 2, series executive producers (and makers of Untold as a documentary series) Chapman and Maclain Way made one particularly noteworthy observation on those conflicting narratives:
“The main issue is a fairly straightforward one: “What is the audience’s clarity?” The idea that there are truly various [points of views] within a story is very difficult to convey to an audience. Just a technical issue there: “Is the audience tracking this? Can they understand this?” Going back to Wild Wild Country, where we had people with drastically diverse points of view, we saw that it could bring a lot of vitality.
“Most people have their own version of the truth. It, in our opinion, forces the audience to actively consider their reactions to the narrative and who they find credible. And we’ve always believed that having unreliable narrators at the heart of our stories is incredibly dynamic. We don’t pass judgment on them; instead, we let them tell their own story while allowing the audience to participate and express their feelings.
The connection between Operation Flagrant Foul and Crime and Penalties from Untold Vol. 1’s focus on the mafia-connected Danville Trashers hockey team was also well-explained by Maclain Way.
Although they are sports stories, we frequently remark that the moment they leave the court, field, or stadium is the moment they start to hold our attention. This was the case with Crime and Penalties; it is a tale about a hockey team, and while they play their games on the ice, there is a tonne of fascinating stuff happening off the rink. These are just incredibly compelling portions of the story that really build these stories that we love telling as filmmakers.
“With Tim Donaghy, it was basically the same exact situation; it’s not nearly a documentary about which team will win, which team will lose, or whether a team will hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to win the championship game. This was more of a tale of a man who began making poor decisions after poor decisions until he became the focal point of a multimillion-dollar betting conspiracy involving NBA games. Every time the FBI enters a tale, it always provides a significant shock of energy, we jokingly remark. It’s always a fascinating component of the situation to us because those guys are typically the ones who catch the bad guys.
Untold, a sports documentary series on Netflix, will return at the end of this month for Season 2. The show will once again focus on a different topic in each episode and is expected to include brutally honest interviews with sports industry insiders who were involved in high-profile and horrific situations. Mardy Fish, Caitlyn Jenner, Christy Martin, and James Galante all appeared in season 1.
The third, named “Operation Flagrant Foul,” would focus on NBA referee Tim Donaghy. After it was uncovered that he was operating a scam in which he bet on his own games, all eyes were on him. Donaghy says he “f-ed” his life up in the season premiere trailer, to put it simply.
Operation Flagrant Foul, directed by David Terry Fine, tells the story of Tim Donaghy and the former referee; it was the largest scandal in NBA history and it touched on organised crime and sports gambling:
“In the summer of 2007, reports that an NBA referee was under investigation for betting on his own games sparked a media frenzy and caused a crisis for the NBA, FBI, and sports fans. Tim Donaghy was the referee in question, and the tale didn’t just begin and end with him; it also involved small-town bookmakers in the Philadelphia suburbs and the underworld of international sports gambling. All three co-conspirators talk about their involvement for the first time, and unexpectedly, their accounts don’t all match up. contains candid sit-down interviews with Tim Donaghy, Tommy Martino, Jimmy “The Sheep” Battista, FBI agent Phil Scala, Tim Donaghy’s attorney John Lauro, Tim Donaghy’s ex-wife Kim Strupp Donaghy, and others.
Donaghy worked as a referee for 13 seasons between 1994 and 2007, and in July 2008, he pled guilty to two federal counts. He was released in November 2009 after serving 11 months in federal prison and the remainder of his sentence in a halfway home. He was sent back to jail after breaking his release conditions.
The episode will also feature other people who were engaged in the tales to speak up because guilty people sometimes try to avoid taking responsibility. This will help viewers determine what is true and what is not. Of course, it’s quite simple to get to the bottom of this specific tale with such a major subject that even implicated the FBI, but it’s always best to hear a version directly from the person who lived at the centre of a scandal. Who can predict what they would say?
The new slate of short-form documentaries from Untold, which releases new episodes every week, has officially begun. Back in 2021, Netflix made known that the first two episodes of Season 2 will be a two-parter and will focus on NFL linebacker Manti Te’o, who was lured into a relationship with a woman who was purportedly fighting leukaemia. The two-parter will include interviews with both the athlete in question and the person who catfished him, just like the other episodes in the series.
The series’ creators, Chapman Way and Maclain Way, discussed how the show came to be and how they choose the topics for each episode in an interview with IndieWire.
We spoke to a lot of athletes and examined a lot of stories, and I believe the major criterion at the end of the day was the need for athletes who are prepared to tell the truth about everything, including the good, the terrible, and the ugly. People that have an agenda, want to appear a certain way, or want to be liked can be weeded out rather fast. That doesn’t necessarily translate into the most interesting stories. Finding athletes who would be truthfully raw, vulnerable, honest, and authentic on camera was crucial for us because we were documentary filmmakers.
