Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons, a new three-part docu-series that will tell the story of the popular lingerie franchise from its beginnings as a small mail-order brand to its rise as a global giant, including its implosion amid allegations of harassment at the top, workplace toxicity, sexism, and financial problems, will be available on Hulu starting July 14th.
The project, which will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, is directed by Matt Tyrnauer, a journalist best known for directing Valentino: The Last Emperor about Valentino’s life, and promises to reveal even the most heinous details, such as former CEO Les Wexner’s relationship with Jeffrey Epstein:
“Matt Tyrnauer films this harrowing and riveting exposé of the Victoria’s Secret brand and its then-CEO, the larger-than-life, enigmatic millionaire Les Wexner, with journalistic rigour. The truth isn’t always what it seems, as the fashion underworld, the billionaire elite, and Jeffrey Epstein are all revealed to be intricately linked to the demise of this renowned business.”
With its daring innovations worn by models with beautiful, statuesque, unachievable bodies, Victoria’s Secret dominated the underwear industry and narrative for over 40 years. Its annual show was one of the most anticipated events of the 2000s, and for a model like Gisele Bündchen, Heidi Klum, or Tyra Banks, being an angel was a dream come true, the culmination of a long career. One of the brand’s primary problems, the lack of inclusion, was buried in the visual qualities of this genetically favoured group.
This unbridgeable gap with the demands of a more woke and inclusive female target market, as well as the resulting drop in sales, led to the cancellation of the iconic fashion show in 2018 and the subsequent emergence of a series of toxic and misogynistic behaviours perpetrated by the VS management team, beginning with Ed Razek, for years one of the main executives of L Brands, the lingerie brand’s parent company, and Leslie Wexner.
A New York Times investigation titled Angels In Hell: The Culture of Misogyny Inside Victoria’s Secret helped bring the brand’s heyday to an end, revealing Wexner’s ties to convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, who managed the billionaire’s fortune and recruited new models for the brand at the brand’s famous Florida mansion parties attended by Donald Trump and Prince Andrew. Since then, VS has replaced its management team and is embarking on a comprehensive rebranding campaign centred on diversity and body positivity.
The primary concept of this new VS is to tell and reflect a form of femininity and empowerment that the brand has never before personified, working with a varied cast of models and influencers from many disciplines such as Paloma Elsesser, Adut Akech, Megan Rapinoe, and Priyanka Chopra Jonas.
The series is directed by journalist Matt Tyrnauer. He also serves as an executive producer alongside Corey Reeser of Altimeter Films, as well as Elizabeth Rogers and Jenny Ewig. Peter Berg, Matt Goldberg, and Brandon Carroll of Film 45 also serve as executive producers.
Hulu has announced that Victoria’s Secret: Angels and Demons, a new documentary, will broadcast on July 14th. On June 18, the three-part movie will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
