The very personal tales of three Indigenous AFL players are explored in the new Australian Original documentary Warriors On The Field, which Amazon Prime Video has just announced.
This hour-long documentary, which was produced in partnership between the Australian Football League, EQ Media, and Amazon Studios, will debut exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Australia and more than 240 other countries and territories in 2021.
Warriors On The Field, an Australian Amazon Original documentary hosted by former AFL champion Michael O’Loughlin, will make its worldwide premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video later in 2021, according to a statement issued by AMAZON Prime Video at the Prime Video Presents event in Sydney.
The moving film honors Aboriginal Australia and its relationship to the Australian Football League while delving into the incredibly intimate and touching experiences of three Indigenous AFL players. It is directed by award-winning director Professor Larissa Behrendt (Eualeyai, Kamillaroi).
These athletes, known as Warriors On The Field, who are at various phases of their athletic careers give us a glimpse of what the game means to First Nations players. Players discuss how they handle the intense spotlights, large salaries, and unwanted distractions that come with playing professional football. Each of the three also shares their individual experiences with racism in the football community. Warriors On The Field makes clear that you must comprehend a player’s relationship to their culture and nation in order to fully appreciate what makes an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander athlete exceptional.
Telling their stories together AFL player Michael “Sonny” Walters, a Noongar from the Fremantle Dockers, and rising sensation Tarryn Thomas, a Kamillaroi and Lumaranaana from Sydney, are both represented by Michael O’Loughlin (Kaurna, Ngarrindjeri, Narungga). Although Michael O’Loughlin started playing football in Adelaide, he played all of his professional games for the Sydney Swans. Michael was the Head Coach of the QBE Sydney Swans Academy and the Indigenous All-Stars squad coach at the AIS-AFL Academy when he retired from the game in 2015. He received his induction into the AFL Hall of Fame in 2015. He currently serves as a director of the Sydney Swans and co-directs the GO Foundation, which Adam Goodes and he established to support Indigenous student-athletes in the future.
