Everything’s Trash, Phoebe Robinson’s TV adaptation of her novel, has been picked up by Freeform for a full season.
After receiving a pilot order earlier this year, the Disney-owned network has ordered the half-hour comedy series.
The comedy follows Phoebe, a 30-something podcast celebrity navigating her messy life, and is starring, written, and executive produced by the 2 Dope Queens star Robinson. She relies on her friends and close-tied family to help her figure out adulthood as her older brother Jayden emerges as a strong political candidate.
Jordan Carlos (First Wives Club) plays Jayden, Phoebe’s incredibly clever, Blerd-y older brother who has recently risen as a top political candidate with enormous hopes for his neighbourhood. Phoebe’s wild yet entertaining behaviour threatens to overshadow his Barack Obama-like aspirations, so their boundary-less relationship must change.
Malika, Phoebe’s shrewd, brilliant, and gorgeous “code-switch queen” podcast producer, is played by Toccarra Cash (Station 19). Malika, Phoebe’s work wife and best friend, struggles to strike a balance between wanting Phoebe to grow up and pushing her to be messy because, hey, the mess pays the bills and is hilarious.
Jessie, Phoebe’s sister-in-law and a former socialite turned feminist and college lecturer, is played by Nneka Okafor (God Friended Me). Jessie is concerned that she is the only member of her in-laws’ family who has the courage to tell Phoebe that some of her antics are endangering her husband’s profession and influencing her daughter too much.
Michael, Phoebe’s best friend, roommate, and friend since freshman year of college, is played by Moses Storm (Sunnyside). He’s a video game livestreamer who doesn’t mind promoting his TikTok whenever he has the chance. Michael will be the mischievous devil on Phoebe’s shoulder because he doesn’t want to grow up.
Robinson’s production business, Tiny Reparations, led by Jose Acevedo, serves as nonwriting executive producer on the series, which is produced by ABC Signature. Jonathan Groff is the show’s executive producer. Chioke Nassor, a co-executive producer, will direct.
In an interview with Deadline, Tara Duncan, president of Freeform and Onyx Collective, commented, “Phoebe has one of the most unique and wonderfully cutting voices in the business.” “Everything’s Trash is a fantastic addition to the Freeform slate, offering a unique perspective on a woman navigating adulthood on her own terms.”
“I’m reminded of Whoopi Goldberg’s chorus in Sister Act 2 when they won the competition.” Overjoyed. Stunned. Robinson expressed his gratitude by saying, “I am quite grateful.” “We’re going to put on a show that you won’t want to miss.”
The bestselling novel “Everything’s Trash But It’s Okay” by Phoebe Robinson is being adapted for the small screen.
The pilot for the half-hour series “Everything’s Trash,” starring Robinson and produced by ABC Signature, has been picked up by Disney-owned cable network Freeform. When her younger sibling Jayden emerges as a top politician, the plot revolves on a 30-something podcast star managing her complicated life. “She’s forced to grow up,” the logline says, “so she enlists the support of her friends and close-knit family to help her figure out maturity, because she doesn’t appear to have a clue.”
Robinson and Jonathan Groff, who is known for “Black-ish,” “Happy Endings,” and “Scrubs,” will write and executive produce the project. Robinson has previously appeared in “I Love Dick,” “Broad City,” and “What Men Want,” and is known for her work on “2 Dope Queens” (based on Robinson and former “Daily Show” correspondent Jessica Williams’ podcast of the same name) and “Portlandia.” She has also appeared in “I Love Dick,” “Broad City,” and “What Men Want.”
She’s also the author of “Please Don’t Sit on My Bed in Your Outside Clothes” and “You Can’t Touch My Hair.” “Everything’s Trash But It’s Okay” is an amulgamation of writings that covers topics such as intersectional feminism, cultural beauty standards, dating, and money.
UTA, Sechel, and Granderson Des Rochers are Robinson’s agents. UTA, Brillstein Entertainment, and Morris Barnes Levine represent Groff.
The project’s announcement comes ahead of Freeform’s Television Critics Association press tour day on Friday, when the cabler is scheduled to discuss its future slate of shows. “Grown-ish,” “Motherland: Fort Salem,” and “The Bold Type” are among its current original series.
