It’s a terrible reality of life that some children are always singled out for bullying. Bullying has had fatal implications in recent years and beyond for youngsters who can no longer tolerate it. We’ve heard a lot from the children’s families and those who have been bullied, but what about the harassers? Until now, we’ve rarely heard stories told from their point of view.
On March 30, HBO will release When We Were Bullies, an eye-opening documentary. The video will air live on the network from 9:00-9:35 p.m. ET/PT, with HBO Max streaming to follow. It aims to shed light on a bullying episode that occurred fifty years ago.
Jay Rosenblatt will take viewers on a journey as he strives to unearth a memory long thought lost to the past, based on his own experiences as a bully in a Brooklyn schoolyard. As he tries to put together why he and others did what they did, the filmmaker will be joined by numerous peers and even a teacher. Rosenblatt will use a combination of archive material, found footage, stop-motion animation, and the aforementioned interviews to bring his documentary short to live.
Rosenblatt’s attempt to discover the darker side of youth and the group mentality that propelled them all is revealed in a trailer released alongside the short’s announcement. Rosenblatt takes viewers back to the scene of the attack, showing them the exact location of the attack. As the trailer plays out, the filmmaker’s guilt and shame become clear, and he isn’t the only one who feels this way.
Throughout fragments of conversations with his peers, everyone expresses regret, humiliation, and discomfort. During the trailer, the question “Why do you think youngsters pick on lesser kids?” is heard, indicating the search for the root of bullying and why it occurs.
When We Were Bullies promises to peel back the layers of why, at our most innocent beginnings, we as humans target out others and project bad thoughts upon them. This in-depth look at some of our most inner demons, which is an official selection for the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, will be a must-watch for anybody with HBO or HBO Max when it premieres on March 30.
