Till was a 14-year-old kid who was murdered to death by a white mob in 1955 Mississippi after being unjustly accused of “offending” a white woman, according to Jim Crow-era South regulations. His assassination and the acquittal of his killers (who eventually freely admitted to their crime in an interview a year later) infuriated the Black community.

Till-kid Mobley’s was famously laid to rest in an open casket, allowing media to print images depicting the terrible nature of Till’s attack. She dedicated her life to the civil rights struggle, serving as a teacher and activist to educate people about what happened to her son until her death in 2003 at the age of 81 from heart failure.
