The long-running Hollywood Christmas Parade, a Southern California holiday tradition, was returned for the first time since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, moving through the streets of Tinseltown with its 89th edition to mark an unofficial start to the holiday season — though one still being celebrated in the shadow of COVID.
The event, held in support of the U.S. Marines Toys for Tots initiative, featured an estimated 5,000 live participants — with Erik Estrada, Laura McKenzie, Dean Cain, Montel Williams and Elizabeth Stanton returning as hosts. Sheryl Underwood, a host on the daytime show “The Talk,” will serve as grand marshal of Sunday’s parade, which begins at Hollywood Boulevard and Orange Street. The 3.2-mile, U-shaped route will travel east on Hollywood Boulevard to Vine Street, turn south on Vine to Sunset Boulevard and then head west along Sunset, back to Orange.
In all, 61 celebrities and VIPS were scheduled to take part in parade. The parade will feature award-wining marching bands from around the country, dazzling equestrians’ acts, large than- life character balloons akin to those featured in the beloved Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, colourful floats and humorous specialty acts. In addition, spectators got to see 49 movie and TV cars.
The most notable included the Back To The Future DeLorean, James Bond’s Aston Martin Vanquish from Die Another Day and the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van. The Idaho Potato Truck Tour brought an 18-wheeler showing off a two-story-tall, two-ton spud. The parade culminates with the appearance of the Jolly Old Elf himself, Santa Claus and his reindeer, ushering in the holiday season!
