Created by Ava DuVarnay and Colin Kaepernick himself, Colin in Black and White is a six-episode autobiographical limited drama series that explored the high-school days of former NFL player Colin and showcases the experiences he had that led him to become an activist.
In 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Colin Kaepernick began kneeling during the American national anthem to protest against racial discrimination and injustice. It was a small act that sparked the biggest sports controversy in history. It also effectively ended Kaepernick’s NFL career.
However, although the conclusion of Kaepernick’s football career fundamentally underlies the series, it is not specifically addressed intentionally. Instead, Colin in Black and White focuses more on the beginning of the story, because we all know how it ends.
The series chronicles his high-school years in Turlock, California, during which time his destiny was shaped by both his identity – a biracial kid adopted by two white parents – and the reality that no matter how good he was or how hard he worked, he would always be judged by a different set of rules than his white counterparts.
The series talks about the toxic power dynamics of pro-football tryouts, complete with the dehumanizing treatment of prospective players being compared to enslaved men on the auction block. The series is not subtle; it does not try to sublimely nudge the audience, rather it intends to educate. The story is told through a combination of scripted dramedy, documentary-style explanatory sequences, some animation, and a lot of first-person confessions.
