Calling all true crime fans for a creepy Christmas this year thanks to Netflix’s upcoming a new real-life murder docuseries Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer. Following in the footsteps of Crime Scene: The Vanishing At The Cecil Hotel (which was released in February this year), the second season, titled Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer, will focus on a series of murders which took place in New York in the 70s and 80s. Earlier this month, Netflix renewed the true crime docuseries for three additional seasons, which will include a series on American financier and convicted Ponzi scheme criminal Bernie Madoff.
The series will examine how the danger and depravity of the titular part of New York City in the late 1970s and early 1980s and how that made it possible for one man to torture and murder sex workers in that area. These three episodes will delve into the social and systemic forces that allowed horrific crimes to go unnoticed for too long.
The man in question, serial killer Richard Cottingham who was nicknamed the Times Square Torso Ripper, officially murdered at least 11 people in New York and New Jersey over 13 years, but claims to have committed between 85 and 100 murders. And now the series will attempt to uncover some of the mystery surrounding the crimes of the so-called “New York Ripper”.
The new seasons will be produced by Imagine Documentaries and RadicalMedia, in association with Berlinger’s Third Eye Motion Picture Company. Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer is directed and exec produced by Berlinger with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Sara Bernstein, Justin Wilkes, Jon Kamen, Jon Doran, Jen Isaacson, Samantha Grogin and Leslie Mattingly exec producing.
