Dead Man’s Switch is a feature length documentary that unpacks the mysterious and improbable story of Canadian cryptocurrency exchange CEO Gerald Cotten dies on his honeymoon in India, sparking an international scandal.
On November 30, 2018, 30-year-old Cotten travelled to India to open an orphanage and celebrate his honeymoon. Nine days later, he was allegedly dead due to Crohn’s disease, and took with him the secret to accessing $215 million in crypto-currency, setting off a mad search by reporters, regulators and former customers for the missing funds.
In the hands of filmmaker Sheona McDonald—who DOXA audiences may re-member from her 2019 film Candice, a profile of feminist pornographer Candice Vadala—Cotten’s story becomes a fast-paced, gripping thriller. live action and animation, this film lays out the benign and outrageous facts of the last five years of Gerry’s life and then re-explores those facts, with humour and intent, as we weave a story steeped in conjecture, suspicion, greed and innuendo. The journey takes us from a crypto club in Victoria, to one of Cotten’s bankrupted former customers in San Francisco, to a doctor in India who might just have all the answers.
What really happened to the young entrepreneur and where is the money? Did it vanish into the digital void or does it remain locked away in password-protected accounts? Everyone has a different story and different pieces of the puzzle.
The truth, likely, lies somewhere between facts and suggestion, but the journey to find the truth is an exciting road of twists, turns and rabbit holes – inevitably leaving the viewer continually surprised and asking ‘How could this happen?’ It is a thriller that explores every angle. Unfortunately, McDonald had limited access to Cotten’s inner circle. So, the players are left to speculate, and the audience is left uncertain of the truth.
