Netflix film “Don’t Look Up”, directed and written by Adam McKay, has one of the best A-list casts of the year – and that’s no exaggeration! McKay assembled a tremendous cast for Don’t Look Up that includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Cate Blanchett who will not be soon forgotten as they are among a plethora of famous faces featured in the film.
There are a lot of Oscar nominees and winners in the group, and just generally talented actors who each have an important role to play. The disaster flick offers a balanced dose of drama and comedy that is bolstered by the performances of its strong cast.
The sci-fi comedy follows a pair of low-level astronomers who must go on a giant media tour to warn mankind of an approaching comet that will destroy planet Earth.
Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence), an astronomy grad student and her professor Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) who track and map the galaxy, making an astounding discovery of a comet orbiting within the solar system.
The problem – it’s on a direct collision course with Earth and they have just six months before the Earth is wiped out! The other problem? No one really seems to care. Turns out warning mankind about a planet-killer the size of Mount Everest is an inconvenient fact to navigate. They aim to inform the United States government and the public so that something can be done to prevent global annihilation.
With the help of Dr. Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan), Kate and Randall embark on a media tour that takes them from the office of an indifferent President Orlean (Meryl Streep) and her sycophantic son and Chief of Staff, Jason (Jonah Hill), to the airwaves of The Daily Rip, an upbeat morning show hosted by Brie (Cate Blanchett) and Jack (Tyler Perry).
What Randall and Kate find out (relatively quickly) is that their message gets tied up in politics, capitalism and power dynamics that threaten to jeopardize the mission of stopping the comet before its impact devastates the planet.
With only six months until the comet makes impact, managing the 24-hour news cycle and gaining the attention of the social media obsessed public before it’s too late proving shockingly comical – what will it take to get the world to just look up?
