“Saturday Morning All Star Hits! is an upcoming adult animated comedy, live-action hybrid series celebrating the campy, Saturday-morning shows of the ’80s and ’90s with riffs on both California Dreams-y tweenage fare and cartoons. Wildly irreverent and slightly disturbing, twin hosts Skip and Treybor (Kyle Mooney) take us on a trip through the Saturday Morning cartoon experience. This series might be something akin to “The Kroll Show,” where both the animated shows and the live-action elements were all interconnected and featured a progressive narrative.
The series is created by Saturday Night Live cast member Kyle Mooney and Ben Jones from animation studio Bento Box. After making the excellent Brigsby Bear, it seems he is back for more cartoon comedy, making fun of and paying homage to all the wacky creations from the 80s & 90s that kept kids entertained. But this new series is definitely not for kids. It looks like it gets pretty dark, and also makes fun of how these cartoons were seriously really messed up despite being made for kids.
A teaser trailer just dropped, and it is one breakneck affair. It first introduces Kyle Mooney who is playing multiple parts in both the live-action and animated parts of the show, including the programming block’s twin hosts Skip and Treybor.
They announce they’re the “new” hosts of the show and then the trailer launches into a rapid-fire succession of very ’80s and ’90s-themed clips. There are cartoons (including animated dinosaur), sure, but there also seems to be behind-the-scenes drama of the show-within-a-show, a bad boy heartthrob, Johnny Rash, who is connected to one of the missing stars and some kind of potential murder mystery.
The second half of the trailer continues with a darker tone with some signs of tension between the twin brothers arising and missing a star from one of the live-action shows. But it would be a truly unexpected twist if this ended up being a pleasantly chill nice show.
At the very least, it’ll be a good opportunity to check out a bunch of references to classic ‘80s and ‘90s television with a darkly comedic twist.
