The ‘Simple as Water’ is Oscar winner Megan Mylan’s omnibus documentary portraits few Syrian refugees’ families affected by the Syrian civil war. These families have escaped from five countries i.e., Turkey, Greece, the United States, Syria, and Germany. The story is simultaneously heart-breaking and hopeful, as the subjects search for a new home, their family members and any vestige of community.
In the first stretch of the film, a Syrian mother is seen in Greece named Yasmeen came by boat with her four children. She has been living out of a small camping tent and waiting to reunite with her husband in Germany since last 10 months. In Turkey, another single mother, Samra, who works all day to provide for her five children.
Her oldest son, Fayez, assumed the responsibility of caretaker for his siblings. Next, we see Omar, a delivery boy in Pennsylvania who has a teenage son. His story gets into the legal processes of obtaining asylum and how complicated they can be.
Then, we see Diaa in Syria who desperately searching for her son, who went missing five years ago, may be was taken by ISIS. At last, there is Safwan in Germany, who is Yasmin’s husband and father of her children.
It’s a stunning achievement for Mylan to make a film about the Syrian refugee crisis so beautiful and endlessly watchable who deserve to be admired for their courage.
