Jimmy Fallon will make his primetime hosting debut and executive produce “That’s My Jam,” an upcoming American hourlong music and comedy variety event show that draws its creative DNA from the most popular “Tonight Show” games.
The Voice coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, and Ariana Grande will be Jimmy Fallon’s first celebrity guests in a special holiday sneak peek episode of the series, aired last week on NBC and ranked as the year’s highest-rated new unscripted launch on broadcast TV.
The format was brought to Universal Television Alternative Studio by Fallon, longtime “The Tonight Show” producer Jim Juvonen and writer Josh Knapp. Adam Blackstone is Musical Director and will lead the house band throughout each episode. Mike Yurchuk will serve as showrunner.
During each hour-long episode, two teams of two celebrities competing for a charity of their choice in a series of music, dance, and trivia-based games and musical performances. One of the signature games to appear is Wheel of Musical Impressions, in which celebrities must perform a randomly-generated song as a randomly-generated impression.
However, That’s My Jam gives the game a twist — it’s now part of a bigger game called Wheel of Impossible Karaoke. It turns out Jimmy Fallon’s viral smash “Wheel of Musical Impressions” was only the beginning.
In addition to musical impressions, the wheel might tell celebrities to perform a medley of songs, swap a song’s genre, launch the Mic, Air Guitar, Don’t Drop the Beat, Perfect Mash-Up, “Vinyl Countdown”, “Roots Name That Song”, Slay It, Don’t Spray It and many more.
We see in a clip, Kelly and Ariana battle it out in a Mixtape Medley Showdown in the Pop Divas category. Ariana sings “Ooops!…I Did It Again,” “Believe,” “How Will I Know,” and “It’s All Coming Back to Me Now,” while Kelly sings “Any Man of Mine,” “You Oughta Know,” “Un-break My Heart,” and “I Will Always Love You.”
Drawing inspiration from the wildly popular, celebrity-fuelled musical segments made famous on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” NBC has hit play on a 10-episode order for the new unscripted series “That’s My Jam.”
The competition series will be infused with Fallon’s one-of-a-kind comedic style, feel-good energy, and a carousel of his classic and brand-new music-based games, featuring a new group of celebrities each week. So That’s My Jam is less game show than just a variety show with some games mixed in.
