The Laureate is an upcoming English-language biographical romantic drama film written and directed by American filmmaker William Nunez, his second film after making Ask for Becky Whiteworth previously, as well as a few short films. This originally premiered at the Mallorca Film Festival this fall.
The movie is based on the true story of British writer Robert Graves who wrote the renowned classics I, Claudius and Goodbye to All That. The film depicts the life of British war poet and novelist Robert Graves. The Laureate tells the story of the remarkable relationship between Graves, Riding and Nicholson until it fell apart when Graves and Riding left England for Mallorca. They discovered Deià together in 1929.
Set against the glamorous backdrop of Britain’s roaring ’20s, The Laureate centers on young British War Poet Robert Graves, who is married with four children when he meets and becomes romantically involved with Laura Riding, a writer from America. Defying the conventions of polite society, Riding moves in with Graves and his wife living as a menage a tois.
Then with the arrival of strappingly handsome Irish poet Geoffrey Phibbs, the arrangement becomes a menage a quatre. But soon tensions and rivalries become so fraught that Graves is a suspect for attempted murder.
Will this stranger push their fragile state over the edge? It looks extra intense and also incredibly passionate, a story about how to reignite passion when the trauma of war extinguishes it. But can that lead to more ruin?
The Laureate have Laura Haddock, Dianna Agron, Julian Glover, Tom Hughes, Patricia Hodge, Fra Fee, Christien Anholt, Indica Watson, Timothy Renouf, Edwin Thomas in the lead role along with other supporting stars.
